Is there an MTB-based hybrid for me? Or should I go custom?

I have the Cross Check. Very versatile, can be built up just about any ol' way.

Thanks for the recommendation. Seems like a reasonable price and versatile!

All you probably need, but perhaps not what you really want (but it is less than half the price of the PX Bibbity Bobbity Boo  https://www.evanscycles.com/pinnacle-lithium-6-2016-hybrid-bike-EV244092

I'm certainly not a brand snob and this looks like a great option -- if it wasn't lime green ;) I'd prefer something a little less conspicuous.

Have a talk with Richard at oxfordbikeworks.co.uk
He will put together the bike you want.

Added to my list of options. Thanks, mate.

Ive just built this its an On One Pickenflick frame from Planet X you could build it with flat bars and MTB gearing, it will come out at more than £1000 but not a lot more depending on what you build it with, loads of clearance for big tyres, but no mudguard/rack fittings, although not too hard to attach guards with a bit of thought.

That's a great looking bike you've got there. Given my spec, it might turn out a little more than I want to speed, but it's definitely an option. Thanks

I was thinking -- if building my own steed is an option, why not adapt my MTB? It's light-weight, super strong and fits me well. It's a 27.5 instead of a 29r but that's not an issue. It does run a RockShox Pike and 2.4" tyres. Would it be an easy thing to swap the fork for a rigid carbon one and swap the tyres over to 35c CX ones? The wheels are DT-Swiss E1900 and are 25mm wide - is that width okay for the narrower CX tyres?

Aren't cx tyres a different size, ie 700c? You'd need new wheels, which I doubt would fit the frame?

Have a chat with your LBS

Also have a look at the Whyte R7 range, all the alu ones are sub 1k. I think you'd perhaps get a 32mm tyre on, but check with the dealer

Having a quick google it seems that I can indeed find some CX tyres to fit 27.5. WTB do a range so that's that one issue solved. Now I just need to see if a rigid carbon fork option would work for the MTB. I think it would probably make sense for me to use what I've got, especially as I'd likely lose a lot of money selling the MTB as it's not one of the main brands and it's virtually new and unused. I could sell my old Sirrus to pay for a fork so it'd all work out.

If that's not an option, then you guys have been excellent with giving me plenty of bikes to consider. @Bonefish Blues -- thanks for the recommendation, I'll definitely take a look at the Stivvy if it turns out that fitting a new fork to the MTB is going to be too much of a hassle. I'm a little confused with my options right now, but it's nice to have the options to mull over!

Okay, just checked out the Stivvy -- it's funny, it's got almost the same spec as my MTB, what with the with single chain ring gearing and DT-Swiss/XT/XTR running gear. And about the same I paid for the MTB.
