I can understand why you want to keep up or overtake other riders. You are very young and very competitive . This is very normal for your age. As you progress into cycling, you might want to join a club or even enter races. Take it a day at the time and see where it takes you. Good luck for the future and enjoy your rides.

18 and a half. Got my first road bike just about a week ago. It's a retro bike. That's all I can afford at the moment but I really like it.

Its a good speed, you'll get faster though

Why not find a local club and ask about joining there club runs ?
Guy i know comes with us sometimes and he rides a 20 + year old Raleigh.

I don't know about any cycling clubs. The only relatively large sized group (10-15 people) I've seen around has been a year ago.

You need to address that. Is your saddle level? If not, try it level. If it's already level, try pointing the nose up a bit. If that doesn't help, try pointing it down a bit.

What model phone do you have?

Samsung Star 2...yeah...

My saddle is level. The nose is slightly pointing up because I had to push myself away from the handlebars if it was level.

Sounds like your saddle is at the right angle. I'll leave it to XY types to advise you further.

That's an android phone. See if you can install strava. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.strava&hl=en_GB&referrer=utm_source=google&utm_medium=organic&utm_term=play+store+strava&pcampaignid=APPU_1_IShwVYSvEcaE7gbs8YHAAg

But be careful - it's dangerous enough in the hands of a middle aged woman

Nope, it's a Bada phone. And it's CPU is so weak that it couldn't hantle multiple processes (music and strava) anyways.

Stupid Samsung. They had a star 2 and a galaxy star 2. Yeah, that's not going to confuse anyone.

But are you out on the roads popular with cyclists at 9am on a Sunday? ;-)

Where do you live, there are cycling clubs and groups all over

You can't have ridden that bike many times in the week since you've had it so 37 miles at any speed is good going. Most people start off with a fairly basic bike and ride in trainers and shorts/tee shirt, if they can't get on with cycling as a hobby/sport not much has been lost but if they become enthusiastic (quite common with members here) then, as money allows they change the bike or upgrade it and buy cycling specific(that is made for the job) clothing. Others are not interested in that and stick with the basic bike for commuting or the odd Sunday ride. Neither approach is superior to the other although snobbery that works both ways - I need to look good and despise those I think don't or I can ride fast and don't need fancy clothes or a carbon bike - exists.
