thing is the hdd that has ubuntu on has win xp , was working so is not an update issue but still freezes at the same point as win 10

@cyberknight , Ubuntu boot or no, have you reseated the RAM and cabling and cleaned the cpu fan and heatsink? A live Ubuntu cd might not be stressing it so much. I'm thinking if this has been the problem, the hot weather was the last straw.

If you have access to another PC, burn a diagnostic CD (Hiren's, for example) and run a RAM check on the rogue machine.

as long as you have backups of important stuff it could be a blessing.
Never looked back after my windows laptop went semi wonky and refused to update and I switched to chromebooks.
Now and again I have to get the windows beast out because of some garmin stuff and everything seems so damn clunky.

update
ubuntu was showing an over power fault to two usb ports in the prompts you see before the gui starts up .
I removed the pci usb ports and now windows is doing a restart install.

...And to cap it all, one of my machines comprehensively fried its PSU today. That's one less machine to look after.
Ah well, just have to renovate another...
