just got to wondering why I'll routinely put on a t-shirt, jumper and hoody on my top half, but only wear jeans on my legs. today i'm wearing jogging troos ("lazybones pants" according to the label) under my jeans as a bonus layer, and it feels great.

umm, and yes, i'm a 'loose fit' rather than 'skinny' jeans type, so there's room!

anyone else in the leg layering camp?

I have an extra leg layer when cycling in the winter, but I wouldn't describe myself as camp.

I wear a full set of thermal underwear if I'm going to be outside and relatively static. If I was going to Ewood today I would wear thermals for warmth. More comfortable than several layers.

Occasionally wear thermal leggings on the bike but it would have to get much colder than it is at the moment.

On a Sunday ride where I'm going to be cycling for several hours I will wear long johns under my tights if it's very cold. For commuting I'm wearing heavy work trousers and the trip is only 25 minutes so there's no need for an extra layer.

I just wear long cycling tights, sometimes I'll wear regular shorts over the top of that if it's really biting, but generally it's the top half of my body, my head, my arms and hands that suffer most.

I've always worn long johns or thermal tights or Ron Hills under an outer layer when skiing or walking in very cold weather. I've got some fantastic Karrimor lycra piley tights with knee and bum patches for very cold conditions. Trouble is, they're purple.

Last winter I wore bib longs with a fleecy lining. This winter I'm experimenting with cycling shorts under DBX Bikesters, modified to give a better underfoot loop similar to that of the bib longs. Ok so far!

Yesterday, when we came in at lunchtime, my manager was in the office and as I went to the cupboard to get my lunchbox out, he asked "Are you wearing your longjohns today?" and then reached past me for his own lunch, from a lower shelf. For a moment, I thought he was about to feel my legs to see if I'd got longjohns on!

I hadn't, but it might have been a good idea. Although I don't have any longjohns. When it's wet, I wear waterproof trousers over my craghoppers, and that's quite nice and snug - but if I'm pedalling the big trike, I get very warm.

I was wondering how to balance this cold/ too hot thing, and then today my Mum rang and said she'd got some kneehigh bamboo socks and they were really nice and warm, and did I want some for Christmas. Perfect! Lower legs will be warm in socks, upper legs warm from pedalling.

LOL and just splurted coffee all over the place

Bamboo is lovely - I've got a couple of bamboo vests and they're so cosy! (even if i am embarrassed to own up to vests) Not seen the socks - will explore.

For cycling, never. On the motorbike (in cold weather), always. Generally, rarely.

I don't class bib longs over bib shorts counts as layering (my usual winter cycling attire) as I don't do it for warmth. It's because I only have one pair of bib longs with a pad, and my leg warmers aren't quite up to winter temperatures.

I think she said she'd got them in BHS - there wasn't much colour choice she said, but that doesn't matter to me. They'll end up grey anyway - the black dye tends to leach out of my workboots in the wet....

anything up to three layers up top, but shorts down below. It's my hands and feet that feel the cold (and my head, but you can keep the smart remarks)

Two years ago I nearly getting frost bite in my nether regions when I got caught out in freezing fog on Christmas eve ride. I know always wear a pair of long johns under my tights if I am cycling at this time of year.

I'll also put a pair on if I am going to be standing around outdoors for any length of time - for example watching my son play football.
