I know lots of people who are far funnier than many 'so called' comedians
I'd agree with that. I'd even go so far to say that many comedians are rarely funny... on stage anyway.
But, in fairness to them, I think it's often because we expect them to be funny and it's actually all very staged - and understandably so. Very few comedians would actually take the stage unprepared, they all have a script of sorts. They play to a script and it all comes across as dreadfully rehearsed... when the better part of being funny is spontaneity. Or they do silly faces or poses to buy time. It's the antithesis of funny really. It's a one-man sitcom.
So I reckon the true test of how funny a comedian is is to witness them off stage... which you don't ever really get to see. They're almost doomed to failure! I reckon many comedians would be better gag-writers than stand-up but there must be a few that could make you howl with laughter at any time and off the cuff.
I remember when I first realised this... seeing Billy Parkinson on a talk show many many years ago in NZ. He seemed very natural and cracking jokes as if he'd just thought of them. But I'd seen him live the night before and he was pretty much presenting a highly edited version of his stage show. I watched him on the tele with a growing sense of disillusionment... like the child realising santa doesn't exist. I can't forget that sense of being cheated and I reckon it's in many comedians' acts.

you could almost widen this and ask - 'are comedians funny?' And the answer would be, almost without exception, 'no'.
