is it wrong to be posting on cycle chat from a blackberry?

My wife seems to permanently attached to her office by the bloody thing. Thankfully, my office do not provide them.

As for whether it is correct, I cannot see a problem.

Or at least she tells you it is her Office!;)

It's better than those self-important twats on the bus who browse their confidential business email in full view of the two passengers sitting on the raise seat behind them.

I'm tempted to take a snap of the email contents next time and notify their employer about the data protection issues of waving confidential data under the noses of Joe Public.... ;)

I've done this with somebody working on a plane with a laptop, she was working on HR info for a food company I know well, it was plain for me to see. I mentioned it to her plus a few names and she sheepishly closed-down.

No harm to me, but breaching the data protection laws which is a very serious offense Col. I'd not be best pleased if I found out that someone from HR at work was sharing something private & confidential about me with the general public on a bus.

There's also the financial aspect - what if I was to read about some sensitive financial matter that was affecting a particular company ? I could then use that insider knowledge to play the market and make big money.

People make a huge fuss about personal and confidential info on CDs and memory sticks being left on trains by civil servants - yet they're happy to read confidential company info which those around them may also be capable of overseeing.

That's the harm. At work, I could get sacked for divulging information that's supposed to be for internal staff only, because that's a serious beach of data protection; someone showing that info off on a bus is doing the same thing.

Thats all very commendable, but whats the odds of someone knowing what the heck it is they are looking at? Im sure if it was top secret and could give someone a financial boost by reading it just on spec while on a bus, then it wouldnt be done so readily. Just seems there is a lot of people who are ready to get others into trouble for something that isnt really any of their business?
Who are these people you speak of who happily read confidential info on a bus, but then they complain when accidents happen in the way you said?

My SiL brings hers out (Blackberry) at every possible occasion and flashes it around.... what I really hate though is the "This email was sent from a Blackberry" message that gets attached......

We always wind her up by adding a signature that reads "This message was not sent from an overrated and overpriced gadget" on the bottom of ours - she hates it.

I hate that too. Thanks for the tip, I'm going to try it on our twat of a sales manager who always sends work related emails from his blackberry. Yes HIS, not the Company's

I can't remember the last time I switched mine on.

The Babe's sits by the side of her bed at night - bleeping away as e-mails come in. She wakes up in the middle of the night, checks the stuff from New York (the office there stays open late), and then goes back to sleep.

It's all a bit disheartening.

FFS my colleague in Nigeria complains that he gets woken by the BB bleeping. "Why don't you just switch it off?" I ask in exasperation. Mine goes off at bedtime and on again before I leave for work; any customer or agent who calls me during out-of-office hours is welcome because I only give the number to the few I enjoy speaking with.

Col - is no-one allowed to take a stand when laws are broken ?

I can see that you're heading towards another "just doing it to get people into trouble" argument like you do with Magnatom when he reports on dangerous drivers.

They're breaching the Data Protection Act - just like companies who send confidential information to the wrong address where it can be read by a person who shouldn't be allowed to see it. That's breaking the law. No ifs or buts about it. We're not even allowed to leave paperwork on our desks at work in case of industrial espionage, and I just work in IT for a Life & Pensions provider ! I kid you not - that's how seriously company information has to be treated. It's not something to be flashing about in public.

Note that at no point have I actually reported anyone for this Blackberry-on-a-bus shenanigans, and I probably never will. But what they're doing is wrong, and you'll not change my mind on that.

I'll leave that there with you - I won't reply again as I don't want this to turn into another 'Official Closest Pass'-style debate.

I've given an example and I could give a couple more. Aeroplanes and Hotels are areas where workstuff has to be treated carefully, it's scary how often people who have an interest in your line of business might be sat right beside you.
