Is commuting to work less popular than its ever been.

Off and on I have been commuting to work on a bike since 2008 yep I am an old bast***. I have noticed despite the fact its winter there seems to be less and less over cyclists on the road. Even cycling into central london at the weekend I do not really tend to encounter as many cyclists as I did ten years ago. Has the popularity of cycling really dropped off ? Whats it like where you are?

I'm seeing less as well.

The likes of e scooters and illegal eleftic motorbikes don't seem to be getting people out of cars, but rather getting people off of bicycles.

yeah all I ever see here in south london is delivery drivers on souped up electric bikes, sad this country has come to delivery guy as the profession of choice of next generation.

I see a fair few on the train I use to get to work. A lot even get off a stop or two early to get some longer riding in. I don't 10 minutes each way on my Brompton is more than enough of that soul suckingly dead ride.

Where on earth do you get that from?

Peopple want things delivered, terefore there will be delivery drivers around. That doesn't mean it is "the profession of choice" for any generation. It is a job done mostly be people who can't get anything better, or who are doing it as a side job while they are in education.

It's still popular here but it tends to be people going to low-paid warehouse jobs, of which we have a lot. And yes, lots of non-pedalled e-bikes.

South London either work in maccy ds or deliver food, choices for employment are sparse. There seems to be no real scope for opportunity.

On my recent semi-regular trips to the office I saw a more cyclists than I used to. Particularly in the morning (I'd be on the bike around 0630-0800) when pre-lockdown sometimes I wouldn't see anyone.

I do try to remember as well unless I stop and wait, the other cyclists I don't see are probably in front of me or behind. Certainly when I stopped a couple of times recently I'd see several come by.

It struck me last year how fewer roadbikes there appeared to be out on the road and while I'm not around much at rush hours, I'm not sure there are as many commuters too.
As said, scooters are around, plenty of them but not enough to replace the apparent lost cyclists.
Add to the.mix, here with Stagecoach, they have concessions which has greatly reduced the cost of local bus travel.
Add to that fuel prices are fairly low. I recall late 2000s when petrol prices spiked, there was a very noticeable rise in cycling commuters.
It's winter fuel prices are low, plenty of alternative modes of transport ...that's before you even discuss potential waning popularity.

I commuted into London by bike for around 20 years. In that time I met and became friendly with several other strava users, all commuting, Pre-covid I amassed 30 odd followers all who were commuters. Post covid my office moved out of London and I gave up commuting 2 years ago, as the commute was too long ( 34 mles one way) and too difficult to make a drive/ride or train/ride solution.
I moved to cycling indoors on Zwift. I now look at my strave feed, of the 32 commuters only 1 consistently stills cycles in, 3 more cycle once or twice a week. Around half of all of the old commuters I see on Zwift on Rouvy etc. Basically for me Covid killed off commuting as most of the commuters I knew were on carbon race race bikes only commuting for excercise and all were in jobs that could be done from home.
( half of the people I used to follow seem to have given up cycling all together and some seem to have gone over to running instead)
