Perhaps off topic as these ar real sayings rather than Mallopropisms and the like, my great grandfather liked to say "I'll do such and such when my ship comes in" - rather splendid for a retired coal miner. He also used to say "it's better to owe it than never pay it" - which turned out to be true in a quite profound way in the recent world financial criscis; all was well till the owers became never-payers.

"It never happened, it's all just a pack of lies"

Not a saying but a direct quote from a Jr Manager today in a panicked attempt to cover up a gross misconduct *which now means he has committed gross misconduct* & anyone else higher who knows of the issue.

Management = Contempt.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
watched a typically good Dave Gorman programme investigating some of these evolving phrases - I guess they're Mallopropisms really.

One was "it's a doggy dog world" apparently pre-dating the Snoop-dog song. More intruiging "bowl in a china shop" which had evolved from meaning clumsy to meaning fragile, to meaning unsuprising or dull. The someone misheard that and then used "bull in a china shop" to mean dull or mundane.

If you've got access to Dave TV's watch again facility, have a look at Dave Gorman's Modern Life is Goodish from last night, where he riffs on invented phrases like "bowl in a china shop" and "cat phrase".

Dave Gorman's Modern Life is Goodish last night had loads of phrases that have been misquoted.

e.g. It's a doggy dog world

and

like a bowl in a china shop

Talking of invented phrases - I think that's a TMN* to me.

*Refers to @User13710 and explained somewhere on this forum.

*ahem*

@User13710 - what's the going rate for a double stab?

I think we're in danger of Trying to Boil the Ocean here, so let's put on the Kettle of Focus and build up a Head of Steam.
