You've got me to thinking about the possible uses for houmous that's past its best by date, or sell by date, or use by date (or whatever) That scene from Close Encounters springs to mind. I used to do model railroading. I could take it up again, I have more time now.

I'd just have to sit and wait until the houmous goes off. Then what would I do whilst I wait? Hmmm.... I might have to give this some more thought.

Re 'soddering irons', and 'tyre irons', I suspect that there is a whole heap of things that have retained names that only make sense if you dig back in their history. Just that I've not drunk enough coffee yet this morning to think of any...

Ah - I was going to chime in with the fact that Americans still seem to call them that!

At least , that is the way they pronounced the word in numerous YouTube videos that I have watched...

For example:

I was wondering that too!

I once picked up my 15W Antex soldering iron by the business end after it had heated up. It isn't something that sane people would do twice!

Been there too!
I'm also not intending to be soldering together bodged circuits at any time. The last time I tried that first I gave myself quite a jolt with a cap, then shortly afterwards burnt my thumb quite badly on the soldering iron! I went to pick it up and just that moment the weight of the cable made it slide back just enough so my poor digits closed around the hot bit! After much swearing I binned it all. I decided the universe was trying to tell me something. As Clint Eastwood said in Magnum Force, "a man's got to know his limitations!"

You mean when the Trevor Howard character smears Celia Johnson with various middle Eastern foodstuffs?

The very same. It was appalling, the hummus was off.

If a nurse goes nursing a nurse, does she nurse the nurse she's nursing the way she's always nursed, or, does she nurse the nurse she's nursing the way the nurse she's nursing wants to be nursed?

Why is all the meat in a 'Full English' breakfast dead pig? Was it a brilliant bit of marketing by the Dead Pig Marketing Board, or is there some historic or cultural reason?
