The problem now is you'll find you keep spending to maintain your platinum status, don't ask how I know this

As I'm new to this bike lark, are there any decent bike routes near me do you know. I live in Walkden and usually go up the A6 towards Chorley (I say usually, what I mean is every bloody ride I do) and it's getting boring.

Your suggestions would be welcome.

Sorry, I'm assuming you know Walkden, it's tother side of Farnworth.

Today I received another box with some new road shoes and another £10 voucher.

The annoying thing is to benefit from this I've got to spend the vouchers within 2 weeks and spend over £75. As the contents of both my boxes were more than £75 each it's a bit of a bugger to say the least. And I'm a bit skint now.

Just get on your bike(!) and ride off.

Many of the people that frequent these fine forums have been completely seduced into believing the shite that they read/get peddled.

Oh dear! What non PC correct nonsense! I'm sure I'll be banned! But hopefully, before I do, I'd ask: what find of cycling do you hope to take up? This doesn't mean you're locked into anything BTW.

Myself? I just love taking off into the country lanes - and the city streets at chucking out time. In short: to me at least, I view my bike as freedom, adventure/danger - and romance - in the real sense of that word.

But above all, freedom. Happy cycling - and don't let the fools trick you down into thinking you can't just get on some old bone shaker and just take off round the world - read some 'cycling' books for confidence. Good Luck.

Bordom mate, get into something more challenging. Build your bike from scratch or convert an old race bike to a single-speed. Something that means you can stil buy and lust over, but spend more time in the shed and less on the net.

PLUS ONE (Don't know how to do the+ sign - sorry just did it.

Moderators! Moderators! Is this (probably) racist non PC correct person a member?

Oh yes...

Some suggestions:

1. Head over Belmont, possibly via anglezarke.

2. Southport

3. Lots of places in Cheshire

4. Over towards Macclesfield/Buxton

I have quite a few routes, which are generally on bikeroutetoaster.

Cheers 400BHP. I might pluck up the grit and determination to try those on me todd. TBH it wasn't long ago that I'd think twice before an expedition like that in my car.

I think they will be Sunday rides. The rides to Chorley I do after work and I just make it back before dark. I intend doing that Pollocini winter sprinter which I think is i Cheshire.

I do need to mix it up a bit but being a bit thick, having no sense of direction and no Garmin I can see myself in the middle of somewhere I'm not familiar with crying my eyes out. That's one reason I'd like to start riding in a group - so I don't have to think

Easy ride starter for 10.

Head into Leigh, then across the East Lancs and past Bents Garden Centre. After about a mile turn left at the r'about on Holcroft Lane which takes you to Glazebury. That's probably around 20-25 miles round trip.

Once you've got to know that route, at the bottom of Glazebrook Lane in Glazebury, turn right at the lights-you should see Warburton Bridge in the distance on the left. Turn left at the next traffic lights to go over Warburton Bridge. Follow the road to a T-Junction. Turn right and then 1st left (Green Dragon pub on your left). Follow the road through a couple of traffic lights (about 3-4 miles probably). Once you get to a t-junction, turn left (A50) then 1st right. Stop and have a cup of tea and a slice of cake at High Legh Garden Centre.

I've drawn them for you.

+1 for Rivington and Belmont. Some good hills up there to get your blood pumping.

I also go over Ramsbottom/Edenfield/Norden/Rochdale way sometimes. I do find myself getting bored at times as most of my rides do end up over Rivington, but I want to start throwing the bike on the car and going somewhere different.

A couple of colleagues of mine have started to meet just outside Chorley on a Sunday morning, (8am). If you wanted to meet up with them and venture out just let me know. I've not been with them yet but I know they've been doing about 15 miles, but if I rode from home to meet them and rode back it'd be about 30 miles for me which would suit me better, but they are supposed to be building upto 30 miles themselves anyway.

I'm doing the Cat & Fiddle challenge this coming Sunday in Stoke. If you fancy that the details are HERE

Just had a look at those and it looks perfect. The wierd thing is I'm a BT engineer for my sins and I had a job right near warburton bridge just the other day but never been around that area before so didn't even think about it for biking. I'll definitely do that one maybe this weekend.

Cheers for that 400BHP I really appreciate it.

Cheers mate. That would be great. I'd kind of like to go out on semi-regular group rides, keep the motivation up and all. The one sportive I've done was that Lewis Byliricki (sorry for the spelling) memorial ride in Preston a couple of weeks ago. It nearly bloody killed me. A few of the blokes I spoke to there were a bit surprised I'd driven all that way as most people on it seemed to be local. Like you say, I don't have a problem sticking the bike in the car and going further afield.

I'm working this Sunday so the cat & fiddle is out I'm afraid but I'm syching myself up for the Policini thing in the middle of October. I've got it in my head to try and do maybe one 100k ride a month. That memorial ride up waddington fell was a bloody killer. I say ride - I only just managed to walk up it, I forgot to take any money on the ride and by the time I got back to the car I could have eaten the wife. On the way back my eyes were popping out of my head and I diverted to the Reebok Nando's and ate for about an hour. The wife was pissing her sides.
