Some of the bikes that I'm looking at for next year have internal cabling. I've read in some places that this can cause an annoying rattle when cycling

Bikes I'm looking at include Merida, Cube or Trek at or around the £1k mark. Does anyone have these and is the rattle an issue?

I've got a 2011 Cube Peloton and there is no cable rattle as the internal cables are just the inners and they are under tension.

Replacing the cables is a doddle too - literally a 30 second job

Depends on wether the cables are in an internal guide (Good) or if the outer continues through the frame (potential rattler)
It should be easy to tell them apart, look for ferrules at the entry and exit point this will mean that the outer cables end there and are internally guided to the exit point.

They can rattle as I found onmy commencal.
you can either take the slack out by using a small zip tie and a little insulating tape to stop the zip tie moving where it enters the frame .
Or you can add 2,3,4 small zip ties to the outer and leave the tails on ,but this involves taking the cable outer out,and then putting it back in ...........good luck, although I managed its a why did I do this again job..
dont add expanding foam or mastic or anything that sets..like some have tried .

My Cinelli Experience has internal cables and it doesn't rattle. BTW, partly due the internal cabling (I think), it doesn't have a barrel adjuster for the front derailler. I found that a bit alarming. A kind fellow parishioner on CC pointed out that you can get in-line cable mounted adjusters if you feel the need. I do.

I have a Cube Agree Race with internal cables, the brake cable which runs trough the top tube sits in an outer all the way through and rattles a bit over rough ground no noise on smooth surfaces. I was dismayed as I had obviously spent a lot of dosh on it, pulling the cable taught at one end does cure it a bit and theLBS even offered to put a different type of cable in. I've just learned to live with it as our roads are that crap you get noise of some sort anyway.

I have a Specialized Sirrus Pro which has internal cables and have had no rattles at all.

My Pals Bianchi with internal cables rattles like a bastard and he's sick to death of it ....
Which model Bianchi has he got? Mine is a Sempre Pro and had a rattle on it from new. Wasn't the internal cabling, but a rattling strengthener/spacer which sits underneath the stem top cap. A bit of grease to hold it central and sorted within 20 seconds. Might be worth him having a look there?

There are more replies without rattles from internal cables, than with, and one day of the with replies is his mate. Personally, I don't see an issue? Much like 11 speed cassettes aren't an issue either?

How many people complain about rattles from external cables?

With 11 speed cassettes, by producing narrower chains and spacing between sprockets on the cassette, the tolerances are tighter meaning more issues with keeping the drive train running smoothly. I'm not a luddite, but I sometimes wonder just how much of a benefit it is to the normal consumer when the industry produces ever more complicated parts which aren't backwards compatible.

Cheers, I'll let him know (I don't know which model he has).
