I have heard that near the equator the sun sets very quickly - up by the poles it is very slow

which makes sense becuase it had further to go at the equator

whether or not this is correct is another matter

It absolutely is correct. Even at the latitude of Spain it gets dark quite suddenly, but to really prove the point, in northern parts where it barely gets dark at all, it clearly takes far longer to get dark. Above the artic circle it might take weeks or months to get dark after all

A lot of them are not exactly accurate positionally - near me, Caerphilly and Y Fenni are the wrong way around, and in fact Caerphilly is closer to Montgomery than to Caerphilly town
