So under what circumstances have the refused to pay out

Presumably only for the insurer's losses
but how did they know about the alcohol levels - and how did they find out?

AND - are they just pushing their luck and hoping no-one gets a lawyer involved and pushed it to law

Renewal due in the Mazda.
Last year, paid £560 fully comp with NC protection. I always seem to pay a lot but it's street parking in a not terrible, but not great area of Pboro.
This year's renewal came in at (with a couple amendments, retired now and less mileage) £480

Tried Compare and Direct line...they're all in the high £500/600.

Sticking with Yoga insure this year, at least £100 cheaper than the others I looked at

I have to admit,I'm terrible for quickly scanning over the basic details of documents, and I've learned I need to be more careful...
So Yoga is effectively a broker, they are not the insurer. I kinda guessed that and have no issues with it per se .
BUT, they're an online company and virtually impossible to contact on the phone if there's a problem.
My wife checked the bank and noted nn payment is showing in the bank for last month (the first month)
So I check my online account, it's live...but I note the expiry date of insurance is next month...eh !!!!!
Lots of trying to use their webcam but that's not manned weekends so I couldn't do anything this morning...adding to the uncertainty.

Then noted they've made my account Gold ? Hmm, I wonder if that's relevant ...a quick check through the blurb, it effectively rolls your policy each month and sends a new certificate each month.
OK, that explains a lot of why
Just had my renewal through

comparison sites couldn;t find anything cheaper - which is pretty normal for me

I was with Tesco for about 5 years but checked every time and the renewal was always cheaper

This year will me my second time renewing with this lot - cheaper again

The money advisors say changing is normal and nearly always cheaper - just not been the case for me recently

I am wondering it the algorithms had be tweaked to keep it lower for a few years then try nudging it up and see what happens
Tried Tesco and they were nearly twice the price!!!

Perhaps (the algorithms). My renewals quote was cheaper too this last year, again, a fair bit more expensive elsewhere. Funny how quite a few people are reporting as such.

I did wonder if it was because of the new rules (or law) that came in last year about not discriminating against loyal customers. i.e. didn't they bring in some sort of cap that said you couldn't give x price to a new customer but charge current customers x+50%? Or did that not go through? There is no other reason I can think of as to why our renewal came down so much. The only thing that has changed for us is that I sold my car, so we are now just a 1 car household, but I would assume that means we're driving the 1 car more so a greater risk?

No, only having one car rather than two is going to significantly lower the premiums.

The assumption is that if you have two cars, you may well be driving both at the same time reasonably often (assuming more than 1 driver insured of course), while if you only have one, you just can't do that.

there is also the factor that with two cars you are twice as likely to have one stolen.

We merged our two policies (with the same insurer) into one two-car policy last year, and while it was cheaper overall, it was considerably more than either of the individual policies had been.

A couple of weeks ago, when I realised I would need a new car, I got quotes for it via Compare the Market on the assumption that it would be my only car. However, I’m going to hang on to the old Fabia for a while, so I amended my details to tick the box for having a second car.

My quote dropped by £60!

there is also the factor that with two cars you are twice as likely to have one stolen.

That sounds unlikely. I don’t think there’s any correlation between the number of cars owned by a person and the likelihood of one of them being stolen being multiplied by that number.
