Indicators for bikes...the future?

I can understand all the reluctance for indicator lights but I do keep coming back to the idea myself as I don't have good balance and sticking an arm out causes me to wobble and lose balance.

If I could have indicators, on the bike, that worked properly, was visible and had the desired effect on drivers I would go for it.
Sticking an arm out with lights on the glove wouldn't solve the original problem for me.

In that case I suggest you contact the people that made it and direct them here, before they waste any more money on it.

In answer to your second question I don't know and don't really care. I observe before and after making a signal and then when carrying out the maneuver (sp?).

Having some extra reflective material is not a patch on good obs and checking what the traffic is doing around you when signalling.

So very true. Ultimately experience and\or training are the key to road safety of yourself and others. Shame, I thought it may have had potential to start with.

I am guessing you are referring to the wireless indicators, not the gloves, in which case everyone agrees.

Whoops didn't realise this thread was talking about flashing gloves (also a stupid idea IMHO!). So yes I was chatting on about wireless indicators. I've never shoved a flashing glove into my own rear wheel!

Note to self - read threads properly before blurting out random rubbish. Then blurt out random rubbish...

Now that really would be a stupid idea

I always find that American right turn signal weird. No one would have a clue if you used that here in the UK!

I like the concept, but if I'm going to have indicators, would rather have them where drivers would naturally expect them to be, either side of my rear light perhaps, or either side of the saddle. Hell, if you want to be fancy, design those gloves to link up to them wirelessly and send a signal.

I just don't think those gloves will be any more effective that a normal glove with reflectors.

I don't know whether motorists honestly miss cyclists' arm signals, or are just trying to bully their way past us regardless.

'They look pretty cool too.'

No they look fkin stupid

Like has been said, I don't think there is a substitute for the rider observing and acting properly. But, if someone really *must* go for illuminated gloves then how about some with the backs made from electroilluminescent fabric? For ultimate high-tec you could have microfibre-nanowire power generation and lose the need for a power pack. Bitt OTT for gloves though

Found this today whilst browsing.

Turbo trainer company Tacx are demoing a product called Lumos at Eurobike that combines front and rear lights with indicators in units that fit into drop bar ends.

Personally, I like the idea of the front and rear lights, but the indicators seem a bit feeble.

I don't think they are even trying to be a substitute for the rider observing and acing properly, but if you are trying to change lanes in busy traffic after dark no amount of looking around is going to make up for the possibility the drivers can't see your signalling.

Personally, I would like a set of indicators that are like motorbike ones - with a little switch on the handlebar that you operate with your left thumb. When I get on the bicycle having been on the motorbike, I regularly try to indicate then realise that I haven't got indicators!

would it not be better to have something reflective down your arm, not just your glove

the arm is larger and longer so more likely to be spotted?
