I auditioned brass chrome and copper in the shop. They is all brass underneath the copper or chrome, or so I was told. I could discern no audible difference between the three but copper doth not offend mine eye. Unlike hi-viz.

(When I used that bell people didn't seem to notice a single gentle 'ting'. The only way I could get their attention was to ring the bell continuously and hard - 'TING-TING-TING-TING-TING!!!' and then I was accused of being rude and impatient! )

My experience with the ping type bells has been the same but I had a completely different reaction to the Dutch style bell supplied with the rickshaw so I got some for my bikes too:

It makes a loud and pleasing ding-dong which generally makes people smile and thank me for being polite.

Doesn't work on everyone of course and there have been the odd ones who have checked their mobile on hearing it rather than looking behind them.

That is about the size of the bells that Lidl is selling at the moment. I tried them in the store and they do sound good, but I am not putting one on my bike - they are huge!

While being a shoeist around town, I noticed a car with a driver on a phone.

He was then sat there when the lights went off with a bicycle stuck behind him. Oh, how I giggled when the cyclist quite loudly shouted "farkING BEEP"
