How much could one spend on a bike? I'm not talking about having it gold plated, or diamond studded winter tyres or a panda skin saddle or anything, but assuming the most expensive frame and components available 'off the peg' (or perhaps a handbuilt frame and wheels, but I mean parts you can buy as opposed to having custom made from unobtamium)?

And, (me being a parsimonious old bat) how much better could it be than something avergaely priced? I find it hard to imagine how much hundreds of pounds makes a drive chain work better....

Obviously, trikes and recumbents tend to be pricier to start with, mostly due to small scale production. Choose your style when answering!

It's a Saturday night.
Has Arch's numbers come up?

Yeah right. I've won the "You've still not done the massive pile of washing up from dinner yet' lottery.....

I was hoping to find out how much it would cost to put together a bike using the most expensive of every component, really.... I could do the research myself of course, but I don't think I've got the will....!

I would hazard a guess that building an upright bike with the most expensive 'off the shelf' parts would come to about £5-6000 but I have no idea how realistic that would be or where that number comes from.

I suppose it depends on how much of it is 'off the shelf' cost and how much is labour cost in frame building and assembly.

If you assembled it yourself it would be cheaper then if your LBS did it.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
I've just "spent" £7,200 on a Titanium Condor build, and £9,800 on a Van Nicholas - both have electronic shifting, an expensive Brooks saddle and lightweight components. Wiggle has a bike for £7,700.

I think they'd be lighter than something cheaper, but not by enough to make a difference to an ordinary mortal.

Wow, I thought I'd just spent a lot but that's going some, need to see the componentry list on these babies!!!

I'm at £3k for one and £3.5k for the other but both with the same baseline Ti frame and headset combo coming in at about £1.1k. That includes SON Delux front wheels on each, a Rohloff on one, and Supernova lighting on both.

The Van Nicholas frames aren't that much more are they, even with a custom option?

That's a big spend!
How much of that sort of money would be the component costs if you are getting it built? I can imagine the build to be a fairly costly part.

I'm reckoning on about £1000 - £1500 (retail) on components for my trike but hopefully most of that will be reduced by getting second hand parts.
