I've had noises from new bikes, so buy one if you want one, but think up a new justification for the purchase! :okay:
Heretic !

"The other one is dirty" should be enough.

OK, I've been busy so I've just been using another bike. Got around to spending a few hours having a go at this today.

I've ruled out the front wheel, front brake, the mudguards (that rear guard has at least half an inch clearance all the way around and probably 3/4" where the bracket is).

The hub sounded OK but I stuck a different wheel in there anyway. A new one.

fark me if it still isn't making the same noise.

I am going to get a new bike.

Wondering if it might be some strange tube/ tyre interaction. I've had enough of it today but I'll change the tube next weekend and see how I get on.

If it's easy to do, take the chain off and have someone push you a little distance. That would rule out the drive system if the noise disappears. Your assistant might hear where the sound was coming from.

A really off the wall thought..you haven't replaced your chain recently have you ?

Edited to say...sorry, missed the last part of your OP. I suggested chain because a couple times when I've fitted a new one, you sometimes get this mechanical noise, but TBF, more of a whirring noise.

Repeating a question: "If you select a really low gear is the frequency the same (I expect it to be less frequent ie just over once per turn of the cranks)."
Edit: Disregard as irrelevant: this is a fixed wheel bike (though not stated explicitly - slipped in a later post).

'Rubbing' is such an easy word to riff on so here is mine.
The scene is that cafe at the top of Box Hill, there are Rapha clad people with shiny new bikes and the great smell of . to tell truth I didn't know what is was. I made it up with a lot less effort than some of these guys who looked like that had just climbed Mount Everest. But there was still that smell - rubber - rubbing I dunno.I looked about and I could discern a certain amount of posing as there were more Rapha Clads than shiny bikes so I decided to descend to the Dorking (and you may already have a clue at this point). As I turned around that roundabout with the giant cock in it I looked back to study my rear and there it was - the too wide tyre rubbing against the chainstay.

It isn't the front brake rubbing because today I unhooked the bendy doodad on the V-brake from the thingy on the brake arm so the brake arms were all floppy and rode the bike like that (my first experience of brakeless fixed btw).

Won't changing gear on a fixed wheel bike prove to be rather tricky?

I reckon the only cure will be inserting earplugs.. :okay:
Or wear earphones and turn the music volume up.
My mate did this with his car. He had a old Renault 19 that rattled so much it sounded like a skeleton having a w**k in a biscuit tin. I asked him about the noise. His reply was that when he was on his own he just turned the music up until he couldn't hear it anymore. Problem solved.

We had a rider on a group ride with a rubbing noise and a feeling of resistance, but when she got off we span all the wheels and it all seemed fine looked like loads of clearance etc.

Turned out that issue only happened when she was actually ON the bike, the extra weight and flex caused the mudguard mount to move too close to the wheel I only spotted it by riding behind her and watching her bike closely.
