I bought the bike from UK Cyclestore online, so I contacted them as first point of call.
They contacted Giant who are going to replace the frame with a 2012 Defy 3. They then send that to Cyclestore who check and make sure that my existing parts are compatible with it. Any that aren't will be sent FOC with the new frame and forks.

Obviously, it's yet to happen, but I'm extremely chuffed so far

Just need to get mine stripped down now, which shouldn't take long, then send it off.

Well done! My SCR1 failed about 3 years ago in exactly the same place. I never for a moment worried about warranty, I just rang Giant and told them to sort it. Giant to be fair were fantastic about it and told me to contact a local dealership (who were less than fantastic). Be aware that Cyclestore may charge you for moving the parts across to the new frame, or at least the dealership I dealt with did!!

Still I was so happy to have a bike again I didn't care!!!

My frame was shipped from Holland so I had my bike back within a week so you shouldn't have to wait long.

My understanding is that Cyclestore will just ship the frame to me, I'll have to build it. They'll also do a check to make sure that all my components are compatible, any that aren't will also be sent through, so I can't complain.

The only frustrating thing is that I replaced the front mech on my SCR a couple of weeks back as the spring snapped on the original, I bought a new one but failed dismally to fit it so I'll have to take it in to my local shop to have that done but I'm just delighted to be able to get back out on my bike albeit in a different form.

I'm sure Cyclestore would happily build it up for me, but they're a 4 Hour drive away so it's just not practical.

As Martin says, (assuming my LBS were not pulling a fast one) its reasonable for the LBS to charge for stripping and re-assembly if you went that way.

BTW Panter...is that a seatpost shim ? I can't work out what it is ? If it is, has that contributed to the stress perhaps, too much stress in too small an area ?

If its anything apart from what was on the bike origionally, i wouldnt let them know....if that is what it is :wacko:

If it's similar to my SCR1, that came with a shim.


One of the problems I had with the dealer was that they said the break on mine was due to me fitting a Ritchey seatpost rather than using the Giant original. They also said that using an SCR1 for commuting was like using a Porsche for the same purpose. I'm just glad that Giant have a more realistic view!!!

As above, it is a shim, but it's a factory fit.
To be quite honest, it's been an absolute pain in the arse since day one. The problem is that it dries out, and then, creaks. Loudly. So, every few weeks, I have to pull out the shim, grease it, and replace it.

It took a couple of Months to locate the creak too, I was close to despair at one point as the noise seems to come from the stem, the bars, the front wheel, anywhere but that sodding shim!


Fingers crossed the new frame won't have one...

EDIT: The reason it looks a bit messy in the picture is because I have electrical tape wrapped around the seat post to mark the correct height, as I had to remove it so regularly.
I wouldn't be surprised if the shim had contributed to the problem actually

That was my thinking. Depends on how deep the shim is. If it only supports the seatpost for say two or three inches, thats (probably) less than having the correct seatpost being supported by say 6 inches. Result is more stress in a shorter area.
It seems quite odd to me for a major manufacturer to be doing that. Perhaps that's why they've had so many problems? Just a theory.

It was certainly no longer than 3" and it also only actually touched the seatpost tube for probably less than 50% of it's exterior as it had 4 wide recesses running down it's outside.
Sorry, I'm not explaining it very well, but it was almost castellated, with only 4 "castle" bits so the contact area between seatpost and tube was pretty small.
I did try and find an image on Google, but that only shows conventional, smooth shims.

Thinking about it, almost seems a recipe for failure?

No, that makes sense. Sounds a ridiculous compromise. I wonder if they still stick to the same recipe (so's to speak)...its one i wouldn't feel was right.

Fabulous service from both cyclestore.co.uk and Giant, couldn't really ask for more.
Time to get assembling...
 
I agree it's fair for an LBS to charge for swopping the parts over, but it certainly shouldn't be charging the customer, they should be able to charge Giant for their labour. If that happened to me I'd insist they sent it to me and I'd build it myself.

FWIW I've had two carbon frames replaced by Focus via Wiggle over the last few years, and Wiggle paid all the courier costs, (they even sent me a bike box to pack it in), and they re-built it at zero cost to me :thumbsup:
