About 10.15 i set off to cycle down to the local pub half a mile away. It was a nice warm windless night so i thought i'd have a couple of pints then have a little tour round on the way home. Suddenly it ran across my path! A little hedgehog right there in the middle of the road. This is quite a busy road so i got off the bike then led it down in the road to hopefully stop any approaching traffic. I picked up the hedgehog then took it to the grass verge on the side of the road.A police car just happened to be passing by, she stopped and asked if i'd been involved in an accident, with the bike lying in the middle of the road. I told her what i'd found so she put on her flashing blue light while i took it further to some grassy area about 100 yards from the road. I wished the hedgehog well then we parted. The policewoman drove off and i went to the pub satisfied with my good deed for the day. I cycled back up the road about an hour later and there wasn't a squashed hedgehog, so it didn't do anything daft and go back! :okay:

Heartwarming tale although I would never lay a bike down in the middle of a busy road.

Crazy but i put the hedgehog's life before my new bike. I believe that these things are meant to test us. Why did the police car arrive at the right moment? If i'd have ridden by and heard a squishing sound i'd have thought about it for years to come. A bike i can get over.

That isn't what I meant. A car driver might so easily have come upon the bike, swerved to avoid it and had a terrible accident. I would always put human safety before animals on the road.

Well done! I read that hedgehogs are getting a bit of a raw deal in towns these days. Hedges are being replaced by solid fences and the poor things can't roam about at will like they used to. The population is shrinking quite rapidly.

The terrible accident can be easily avoided by running over the bike that has been carelessly left in your lane.

I hit a hen pheasant friday in my van ,killed it instantly..made me feel sad ,but totally unavoidable.

im sure some low life people run over wildlife for devilment...as you often see dead stuff in the centre of a lane so not where wheels should be..

Love hedgehogs. Seeing quite a few squished on the roads at the moment. They don't move all that fast. I can never understand why drivers can't make more of an effort to avoid them unless there is something coming the other way or close behind.

There was one on the road in the middle of the day last year, right outside our house.

It didn't make any attempt to move or defend itself when I picked it up, so It spent a night in the greenhouse before going to a local vet who always takes in injured wildlife.

I wanted to keep it as a pet really.
