Thank you everyone. I have listened to all the advice and now have my pedals with SM-SH56 multi directional cleats. I have wound down the tension, balanced in the door frame and practiced clipping in and out. So far clipping in is the tricky part. I'll keep at it but if that doesn't improve I'll try adjusting the tension up a bit as someone suggested.

I may venture out when it gets darker so no one can see me if I have a clipless moment.

dont forget its not compulsory to have a clipless moment  Ive done 4000 miles clipless and have never once had one! (I bet I will now!)

+1 on the SH56 cleats, theyre much easier to get out in a panic than the 51's as they release in almost any direction.

I hope I haven't jinxed you ^_^

Just do it. Go in and pay for them, fit them and ride. I find that when I am approaching a junction or similar I just try to remember that I am clipped in so I can unclip early.
I ummed and ahhed for a year before going clipless and now wish that I had done it when I first thought of it.

Glad you got 'em!

I doubt if you'll be able to have a clipless moment with the SH56's - they just release.

I see no advantage with SH51's except for riders who have extremely powerful legs (not me although my wife thinks they look nice!) and who may be able to pull out of the pedals on the upstroke - presume you haven't got legs like that!

You were right, I had no trouble getting out of them, it all went much smoother than I had anticipated much to my relief!

Well done! After a while of using them you will find that whenever you're back on flat pedals, you'll feel curiously unconnected to the bike and you'll wish you were clipped in.

Mine arrived in the post this morning, along with a packet of Haribo.... Breakfast! Will fit them later and go hide in the park for an hour or so to try them out.

How did you get on?

I didn't. Fitted them this morning then the weather has been atrocious so spent all day on my bike project. Got loads done and meant to be pretty nice tomorrow.

Well a productive day is a good consolation. I hope you have better weather tomorrow.

Watching that video it seems weird to me that just a few months ago I'd never ridden clipped in, but watching it I remember the best advice being to keep pedalling when trying to clip in. I often make it right across a junction before I'm fully clipped, in fact if there's a ton of traffic or it is raining or something else daunting I don't bother clipping until I feel safe to do so.

I should add that I leave my right foot clipped in all the time and have the pedals set very tight, my led leg is my freedom foot

Well done LF! I bought my first road bike last week and as it didn't come with any pedals I've gone straight for clip less *gulp*. My plan is to fit them, have a little ride out without clipping in to get my head around the gears and then, just maybe clip in if all is going well!
