You could do with letting the forum know the make of the brakes.

Why didn't he just swop the brake pipes over? If you're careful you can do this without getting air in the system.

In principle though, no, a bicycle hydraulic brake is nothing more than a closed hydraulic pump, narrow piston/long travel - wide pistons/short travel and will operate no matter what attitude it's in. He might have problems when it comes to servicing them though.

On long downhills hydraulic brakes will seize up if provision is not made for the expansion of the fluid. My original Hope minis are pretty bad for this. Later models have a screw you can undo to increase the volume of the system.

Whihc model of Shimano brakes?

The earlier ones had reservoir that has to be uppermost. If you fit them upside down ,then that is asking fro trouble as air can enter into the sytem and brakes will get spongy.

All you need to do is get an 8mm spanner, undo the brake hose hollow ut at the brake lever, sawp over and tigthen. You should use a new olive but you probably get away with it.

no need for new hoses (not sure why you said cables as they are hydraulic, right?

I fitted Avid Juicy 3s to a bike that originally came with V-brakes about 18 months ago. It was a simple case of putting the rear-brake lever on the left, and front-brake lever on the right. UK style. I think I remember you couldn't do this with the Juicy 5s as the shape/design of these levers was not symmetrical. It would help a lot to know which brakes he's got. What's the bike? Might be able to Google the specs.

I understand your brother wanting to switch the brakes over. I've gone arse over tit a few times, including one time in traffic I not the bike went flying into a taxi. My brother, who lives in Berlin, has gotten into the habit of checking which way the brakes are set up every time he gets on a new or borrowed bike.
