If you like the bike as it is but want to do a bit more rough stuff then I would just stick some off road tyres on it, sounds a lot of hassle to be changing the bars/shifters etc.

I do like the bike and have upgraded the alloy forks with carbon cx forks but just think I might prefer drop bars:thumbsup:

With a 105 drivetrain, the only mechanical compatibility issue for your bike is with the brakes. Drop bar brifters don't pull enough cable for V brakes.

You have three key choices, 1) replace V brakes with mini-V brakes, 2) replace V brakes with canti's, 3) introduce problem solver travel agents front and back.

Respective disadvantages are:
1) limited mud/tyre/guard clearance which by the sound of your intended purpose might not be too serious for you,
2) you will need to introduce hangers, and get into the joygroove of canti setup
3) you will be introducing new elements in the cabling system and which is a bit of a kludge

That's sorted it for me, I had an idea it wouldn't be straight forward but just couldn't think of what would get in the way, cheers for that mate i'll stick to flat bars and just change the tyres as I think the bike would look a bit poo having canti's but with v brakes bosses poking out, and the other suggestions I hav'nt a clue about ^_^

9 speed 105? I was not aware of such a thing, not sure when it became 10 speed. You need 9 speed shifters then I believe

105's have existed since before indexed 6 speed...

You are welcome. I think there you are thinking about caliper brakes, which most frames designed for V brakes can't take at the back. Cantis need and use exactly the same bosses as V's, but they also need hangers.

You could combine these levers with bar end shifter and it would work out cheaper:

If the position of the shifters are not to your liking there are a few manufacturers who make mounts that put them nearer more "traditional" locations:

I had the same thoughts a few years ago but ultimately as others have said, the geometry was wrong and I was too tight to buy a short stem, mech disc brake calipers and the shifter mounts for a playaround.
