Huddersfield Station and Cycle Parking

Have you cycled the A644 between Brighouse and Dewsbury, is it ok commuter route or something a bit rude so to speak?

The bit between the M62 and the 3Nuns roundabout can be busy, but they're looking at putting a Sustrans cycle route in. From there on there's a cycle lane most of the way through. I use it nearly every Sat/Sun as the cycling club I'm with (Ravensthorpe CC) is based in Mirfield.

Also, there's cycle lanes from near the A62 junction right through to Dewsbury - but I don't bother using them.

I regularly rode Bradley to Dewsbury, and there is a Tarmac gSustrans greenway to keep you off the main road most of the way. The road is busy through Mirfield and Ravensthorpe at rush hour. There is also a shared use pavement along by the Three Nuns.

Just a bit of info re the cycle route DC mentioned - Sustrans have the £££ allocated to Calderdale Council to link the Calder Valley Greenway and Spen Valley Greenways - this would link a lot of towns together on relatively flat (for the area lol!) routes but there is a sticking point with a landowner by Cooper Bridge where it crosses Calder/Hebble navigation.

There some info online about it, I'll dig it out tomorrow but it appeared on one the local rags websites in last 6-8 weeks, I also spoke to xxxx of Calderdale Council's cycling/sustainable transport group and he confirmed the same - there is £££ to link the routes, but landowners are being awkward.

How about Mytholmroyd? Cheaper than Hebden Bridge and you could ride the Calder Valley Cycleway to the Calder/Hebble junction then the Hebble Trail Cycleway into Halifax centre. Great cycling on and off road all around. And direct rail connections to Halifax/Bradford/Leeds/York/Manchester/Preston etc. M62 not too far off either for when you need to drive long distance.

If they manage to do this it will provide a very good link between a lot of towns, but I have to say I dont find Councillor Martyn Bolt's comments on that article helpful. He may be right re A62 needing improvement but I dont think that should come at the detriment of what could be a very useful link.

Looking up and down the canal to be honest, I've considered as far east as Todmorden by that might be too far for a commute into Halifax.

I like the area in general, I've had a good few years in Leeds but getting a little bored of the same routes and having done a little cycling in the area now I'm wanting to do more (and live in a nicer house!)

@wiggydiggy - I know Martyn and can appreciate his comments. If the route goes too far out then riders will stick to the main roads. He's working on it as a councillor. A couple of the local Sustrans routes meander a lot, meaning that cyclists use the roads instead.

He'd be open to comments and thoughts - if you're at the Brian Robinson sportive this weekend he'll be there as he organises it.

I agree you can get more for your money outside of Leeds, which is one reason why I live in Dewsbury! If you've children, schools can be an issue, although we're OK with where mine are (providing the youngest passes the Heckmondwike entrance exam ).

I could be - at the sportive I mean - and a 75 mile ride may be the perfect hangover cure as I'm at a house warming sat

The sustrans route planning in this area is well, a bit of a annoyance to me ATM When I asked them first about the link route they were at worst not interested (despite it being on their maps as 'planned' for at least 18 months) and at best lacking information. The kirklees concillor/worker I spoke to laid it out very clear that they want to build the route from about where River Street ends and it will go eastwords and come out around where the Total Petrol Station is by Cooper Bridge. But the landowner of the site there is being awkward, as is the quarry owner in the middle if they wanted to get it onto Lower Quarry Road.

Martyn's not wrong either I think, the A62 probably does need improving but its a different route to the link completely and the two I think can exist together rather than it being one or the other as he seems to be implying.

I do a Holmfirth - Halifax commute most days. It's not too bad on the roads, but its not what you'd call flat.
I like hills though........
