How to make a high quality bike look like a heap of scrap

I don't think just making it look tatty will make a difference if someone really wants it

Petty crime in my area is now to the point where I suspect the thieves don't actually *want* anything; they just grab anything they can steal just because they can.

I have a $10 plastic chair on my front porch. The first one sat there unmolested for more than ten years before vanishing one night. I bought a new one and anchored it to a post with a cable and a padlock. About once a month I'll find the chair out in the yard at the end of its cable, laying on its side on the porch, etc. as someone failed to make off with it.

Then you wouldn’t be able to find it yourself, especially after a beer. Besides, you’d be done for health and safety by having invisible things you can trip over on the street.

From experience selling a high quality bike to some of my customers would seem an effective way of turning it into a piece of scrap.
