Mine used to be get slightly cross and flip them the finger but now its simply smile and give them the thumbs up. That is so much more satisfying as they dont expect it ^_^

Blow them a kiss

Especially if it's a saxo full of teenagers with a drainpipe for an exhaust. The amount of stick they get from their mates for an 18st male cyclist blowing them kisses is quite amusing

Also, stand on the pedals and point at your own behind before doing so.

To be honset though, the best reaction is to grin like mad and wave like a mexican in a tsunami before blowing kisses(think David Walliams here)..make them uncomfortable:rose:

One incident made me smile recently was when I was riding along the Scarborough - Whitby cycleway. I was approaching the main road and and coming up behind another cyclist, I politely rang my bell a couple of times and he immediatley moved to the right hand side of the track. I accelerated to pass on his left when he also drifted left . we actually lightly brushed against each other but my momentum carried me safely past. A little way ahead was a gate so when I reached it I held it open as the other guy rode up. I was amazed when he began to bawl and shout at me and accused me of being a mad b****** and didn't I know that I should ring my bell when overtaking. When I told him that I had all he said was "well I'm a bit deaf, you should have rung louder" While this was going on a crowd of assorted cyclists and ramblers began to gather to watch two silly old buggers on bikes having a go at each other.
It was all quite embarassing really.

I was shocked at some of the 'rude-ness' of some people towards cyclists. You'll get used to it though, and you'll soon find being branded as a cyclist funny! Laughing away at the old 'why dont you get a car' comments or the 'you should pay road tax'
Luckily Im cycling back home in Wales at the moment, and everyone so far has been superb! Holding back on country roads until they can over take/I pull in to let them overtake when I find somewhere safe and even giving me waves as they drive past! Superb! Even if I do get a few strange looks because of the lycra ;)

I think this is an area specific thing ? i rarely get anything untowards here in Devon like you have good experiences when your back home in Wales

I have to say as a rule on my normal route(s) locally i have not really had a problem other than the normal i didnt see you mistake, and even then nothing really too bad.

My normal bit of main road is used by lots if cyclists so i wonder if the local drivers, includinf myself , are just used to bikes being about.

Around here there are lots of cyclist and quite a few horses. So I assume local drivers are used to slowing down for safe passes.

I would be really wary of doing anything provocative... they are in a big blunt object. Wave and smile. Having said that I did shout Bl****y H*ll at a bloke driving towards me at 60 on the wrong side of the road. Well I had to do something to pass the time and there was no hard shoulder and a 9 inch high grass verge so that wasn't an option unless impact was imminent. I still don't know if I would have jumped in time... As it was the cars he was overtaking managed to give him enough room to miss me by a whisker.

I'm 20st at the moment. Twice I have had young teenagers laughing and shouting "look there's a fat b@stard on a bike!". After the first time I actually stopped riding for a few weeks. I was the one who lost out so after the last time I thought bollo*ks to 'em. I just ignore them now and carry on.

I hope they realise before they die of a heart attack that cycling is very helpful and fun. So:giggle: eveytime you see them and it'll soon turn into a laugh(an eeeevil laugh) and continue:bicycle:
