I've only been out on my bike twice and had to deal with idiots 3 times! First time was 2 wee 'neds' and I had my cycling top on (bright orange might aswell be seen!) and they shouted 'Look at the idiot on the bike. Have you just got out of prison?' and last night it was a Saturday night so a few drunks about.. One walked (drunkly) infront of me without even looking so I had to swerve out the way then further down the canal there was a group of drunk guys who were shouting and wouldn't move out the way.
Don't let it distract you from riding safely. The red mist can make you take risks you wouldn't normally take.
If you happen to catch up with themt then cycle past or hold back, but in either case don't make eye contact or gesticulate. Some drivers will flip out over absolutely nothing and a few cyclists have been assaulted by drivers getting out of their vehicles. Most of them are just looking for a reaction so best ignored.
Especially if it's a saxo full of teenagers with a drainpipe for an exhaust. The amount of stick they get from their mates for an 18st male cyclist blowing them kisses is quite amusing
I'm finding with my commute to work, at least one instance a day of people in general being twats.
I cycle on a greenway mostly and it's a combination of ignorance and stupidity with other people. For example, today a man with his dog saw my approaching. Instead of having the dog on a leash, he was allowing it to walk about on the greenway and it obviously didn't like cyclists. As I went passed, the dog ran after me snapping and he struggled to grab a hold of the dog's collar. (why let the dog off the leash when you know it has an issue with cyclists...on a cycle way!!!)
Yesterday I had two instances where I had to break really hard because the person in front of me decided to to do a u-turn without looked to see if there was anyone else about. The second instamce was a girl walking out in front of me.
I do use my bell but really in some cases a fog horn would probably be more appropriate.
I find it incredibly hard to understand people on the greenway just totally oblivious that as well as being a walkway,it is a cycle way.
As soon as people leave the roadside pavements they seem to tune out as it feels safer. On the other hand they are shared use so I accept that if I use one then it will be slower than riding the roads.
As for dogs off of leads - if they have a problem with any other things they are likely to meet while on a walk then they should be on a lead IMHO (and not the ninja tripwire ones)
I tend to have very few run-ins with drivers . I have a favourite response now after a chap was annoyed at me for using a roundabout (correctly ) last week.
He let rip with a few sentences, punctuated by swearing. I just leaned down to his window, smiled and said "Cool Story Bro" and cycled off. Felt grand
A copy of Cyclecraft is the best money you'll ever spend.
It says that, should another road user antagonise you, put it out of mind and seek a positive interaction with some other road user. So if someone's close passed you whilst on their horn, give a thumbs up to the next guy who leaves you some room.

Just kill anyone who annoys you, it's the only way.
Alternatively, give some stick back, ignore, laugh, shout, move on. Generally most cyclists will use a combination of the above. The aim should always be to have more move-ons/laugh than the others.
