Second puncture. Then realise how thin it is and wish I'd done it at first puncture. So far.

Can you see the inner casing through where the tread should be?

Yes - replace at some point
No - keep using it

Thanks I've done 2000 mile on them so far in 3 months and they look fine but online reviews people were saying that was the average mileage for them so it made me think I wasn't looking at them properly.

How often do you replace the tyres? and what kind of signs should I be looking for regarding wear

Every twelve months I put a new tyre on the front, the old front tyre on the back and ditch the old back tyre, once a week I check both tyres and remove any debris that the tyres have picked up.

Sorry to Jump on this thread but I have just noticed I have done 3,474.4 miles minimum on my Cube (Excluding turbo miles).
Should I be looking at a new chain or anything????

New chain definitely and possibly cassette .

NEVER! And none of this cleaning malarkey either. My commute bike is approaching 10,000 miles from new and has never been serviced in the 3.5 years since I bought it. It also hasn't been cleaned in over 2yrs. Despite this apparent neglect I do carry out minor adjustments occasionally and will do odd jobs as necessary (like greasing the headset bearings or replacing the bottom bracket etc) and the bike still runs like a dream and is very, very reliable. Chains last me about 1.5-2k and cassettes usually last for two chains.

Tyres I have marathon tyres and I have done 4'283 miles with no problems I have had this bike just under 18 months.
Over the servicing as I got it on the cycle to work scheme and it is on lease so to speak I have to be seen to be looking after it.
I am at some point going to start learning how to do these simple jobs

This question has been asked before but how often should a bike be serviced ?
I last had it serviced back in mid may, I have since done 701 miles.
I was planning on doing the service every 6 months but as it is used every day as my only form of transport.
Should I service it after every 1'000 to 1'500 or every 6 months which ever comes first ?
Regards Iain
bike maintenance is an ongoing thing that should be done yourself at home - there is nearly always something that needs minor attention after every ride. It shouldn't be viewed as 'ride the bike for x amount of miles/months doing nothing, and then get a full service done in one go at LBS' - this is simply a terrible approach to it! And on top of that most LBSs will do a fairly poor job - obviously that largely depends on your standards, but all shops I've ever seen in action have fallen well short of the minimum standard I'd expect to see.

did my middle after 12,000 miles but mainly because I wanted to change the gearing a little.
Wipe chain after most rides, oil 1-2 weeks, its wheels I have problems with, they break often, well every 12 months or so, last ones because I hit a stone a bit hard put a dent in the rim. but as I am constantly upgrading things it is always being adjusted repaired ect.... gone from 7sp triple sora to 8sp (cheap right brifter off ebay) then 9sp you get my drift......

okay I'm judging several thousand LBSs on knowledge of about 30 or so, so yes, a large generalisation but no doubt some truth to it

I'm yet to find an LBS in my area I'd trust to give regular work to. And being a bit time starved plus new to all this I'd kind of like to have one. They've either failed to care, failed to look at things I've highlighted, or in one case almost definitely handed me back a bike they broke and 'forgot to mention it'. I was very up front when I bought the Synapse, "the two years free servicing is useless to me, I like your sales, I don't trust your workshop." It's unfortunate, a decent workshop would get quite a bit of my cash.

On the plus side, since buying a cheap work stand at Decathlon I've now sorted out the gears on the Sirrus and am slowly moving on to other stuff so eventually it'll only be the lack of time that's getting in my way, not the lack of ability.
