So, he is complaining that someone had to squeeze past the car as it was parked obstructing a footway. Solutions for prevention. Don't park on the pavement. Walk to school, as you have done (assuming it was parked on a school run). Get a smaller car. Park on the road. Get a smaller car and park on the road. If there's no room to park properly, park further away. If he's so precious about the car, park it out of harm's way. Drive an old banger. Alternatively, organise their lives so they're not dependent on an antisocial monster SUV. Assume a hippie lifestyle. Become a Buddhist, forwearing ostentatious material trappings. Om mane padme hum. And so it goes on in ever widening ripples, intersecting with all the other car centric ripples as it goes. It's all a symptom of a wider malaise.

Have they any proof it was you? How many pedestrians have had to somehow squeeze past it while it was parked there? Why are you, out of all the passers by , being picked on as the one who caused the damage? Cars are mobile, it could have happened anywhere before he noticed it. Had they noticed it before, and were just waiting for the right punter to lay a guilt trip on, to get a free repair? (assuming malice on their part, rather than incompetence, for the sake of argument).

I assume you haven't given your name and details? There's such a thing as being a good citizen. There's also such a thing as being taken for a ride.

I would deny any responsibility and as others have said tell 'em to "jog on", though personally I might word it differently, but the second word would likely be "off". They are clearly taking the piss and trying to exploit your good nature. Scratched car whilst walking past; yeah right

Pavement parking, 4x4, outside school, blocking the path - jog on. TBH most scratches polish out if you do it properly, and how are they going to prove you did it. It's not your fault if they have blocked the path. A nice complaint to school and an email out to all parents about parking on the pavement outside school.

Just tell them it couldn't have been you, impossible even. Because if it were, you'd have done a proper job...
