Torque isn't too important until you have a part fall off or a thread strip or a part crushed. THEN you wish you'd bought a torque wrench.

But that's the time honoured method for working out the correct fit. Tighten until it strips the thread, then back off one half turn.

Have been my own bike mechanic for many, many years and never owned a torque wrench.

I guess if you have carbon bits to do up they might be needed but metal to metal you don't need 'em.

Creaks can be caused by Bi metal corrosion where steel meets an alloy copper slip or such like will cure these creaks pedal spindle to crank is a very common one.
