Youth A events usually run for 40 minutes. The only predictable thing about most crits is their unpredictability.

Assume a crit of 60 minutes, and a lap time of between 2 minutes and 3 minutes depending on the circuit, so say 25 laps. Expect in the first half that there will be on average one per lap, possibly more if there are gradients. Possibly goes quiet for a bit, unless someone attempts a break and the bunch chases. Either way, all hell breaks loose with about two laps to go.

Thanks very much for the info on that, really helps clear it up.

Perhaps this might help. All races have periods of quiet at a steady pace, and periods of flat out activity. These can vary from less than a minute to however long someone can sustain an effort "in the red". The best way to train is to mix the steady state efforts with interval training. Any competent coach should be able to help. The intervals build recovery and more importantly the ability to go fast for sustained periods. Any criterium is a series of efforts without attacks, every corner is brake and sprint for a few seconds. So train for speed and lactic/pain resistance, combined with endurance sessions. That should work as a starting point.
