How do you track changes to your bike?

I'll hunt round in Strava to see where you can log the details, as I record my mileage but nothing else in there.
OK, just read three pages, and no one seems to have answered how to do this in strava.

Assuming you have recorded your rides against a bike in strava .... go to https://www.strava.com/settings/gear then click on the bike you have added the (tyres/cable/whatever) to and click "add component" then just specify what you have added, and when and it will log it for you. Only takes you a second, and much quicker than finding your receipt, and guessing how long after that you actually fitted it.

(ok, it's not perfect. That can't be right about the brake pads ;) )

Thanks, I did try a quick look but I think I need to on a computer to find that option, and I didn't use one today but I will try tomorrow, though up till now I've not recorded the bike information at all. But I could start.

You have to use a computer for this, yes @summerdays. As stated, it's quick and easy to do and really useful. You could always login to the main website, using the browser on your phone, rather than the App.

Edit: Just checked and works fine via browser on phone. Forgot to change some stuff myself, so have done so now. You Retire the old kit and it works out mileage until day you retire it. When you add in the replacement, you can set the date it was fitted. The retired kit then adjusts to match, so mileage not counted twice.

I just count the ever-increasing number of nicks and scratches on the bike. Sometime next year, I'll top 100,000km on it. The old thing just keeps on going...

I do plan to make some kind of spreadsheet to track parts replacements and periodic maintenance, though, I just haven't gotten around to it.

RidewithGPS has a feature for tracking bikes & components. I think it may be one of the premium features you have to pay for though.

Personally I just rely on memory and current state of components. "That's worn out. I last replaced it ages ago. I'll get a new one". That sort of thing.

I write the date and the bike mileage in biro on the inside of new tyres.
It does not wear off, and interesting to note when you replace it.

I'd have to take it off to do that.... And if you saw quite how long it took last Tuesday and how blue the air was you'd know how unlikely that was:biggrin:

That is why you write on the inside when you fit the tyre, and you read it when you replace it many thousands of miles later.

Yep.

Like writing on the wall when you wallpaper the house.

I am after some way of recording when I did things such as changed a tyre recently so that I can get an idea of how long some of these last. I often notice that other cyclists can say how many miles a tyre did, I can only guess as I know I didn't replace it last year so I'm guessing it did somewhere from 6000 miles upwards, but I could be wrong.

So I'm interested to hear how others are recording this sort of information and what they record.
Strava. It has a servicing record available.

You don't need to pay extra for it, free membership already had that feature. All you need to do is as the component, putting up with American spellings and add the date the component was changed. If all your miles are logged via Strava then you have an accurate gave gauge of distance and life.

I'll have yet another try, I still didn't find it when I looked yesterday using the browser but then I'm not always the best at spotting things.... Eventually I'll get there:okay:

Finally found it and added a couple of bikes though both now say 0 miles. Can I change that at all even if only to this year's mileage on them?

And now I need to work out how I specify which bike I used or do I edit that in after recording a journey?

For new rides, you can set a bike as default. If you only have one, that's probably the default. When you save a ride you can change the bike, otherwise it will stay as default.

Google found me a little 3rd party tool that does this. I haven't used it myself, so no warranty applies.

https://objem-app.appspot.com/

If you select activity as "Ride", then check the "Gear" box and use the pull down to select the bike.

And vote for this feature https://strava.zendesk.com/entries/43710114-Quick-Edit-list-of-Activities-for-bulk-editing

you need to change the date that the bike was acquired on. so if you have had it since you started, you need to set it to since beginning. Basically the reason it says 0 miles is that you have either told it the bike was 'new' today or that you have never had bikes recorded and none of your rides have which bike you used against them. If it is the latter then you may end up just starting from today with the recording.

It will automatically calculate the mileage for each bike if you set which bike you have used in the ride. so I have only ever set which bike I used in the ride details for the following to be calculated for me.

Obviously this is inaccurate for my 'off-road tourer' because I didn't have strava on tour! So I have to remember that the bike has roughly another 9,000 miles on that figure not to mention the fact that I only started using strava a year after I came home, so there is also almost a years figures missing as well... but it gives an idea.
