How do you track changes to your bike?

I am after some way of recording when I did things such as changed a tyre recently so that I can get an idea of how long some of these last. I often notice that other cyclists can say how many miles a tyre did, I can only guess as I know I didn't replace it last year so I'm guessing it did somewhere from 6000 miles upwards, but I could be wrong.

So I'm interested to hear how others are recording this sort of information and what they record.

Being 57 years old I know the answer to this one. You use a pen and paper. I would use a fountain pen, but I am from another era.

I have always wondered why they write those sort of details down.

I'm interested to know why you're interested. Taking tyres as an example, if they go very quickly, you'll just know they haven't lasted long. If they go at 6000...does it matter if it's 6000 or 7000?

Other than that, if you record all your rides in strava or similar, just write down the dates of change and you'll be able to work it out

Spreadsheet.

I record the date and length of each ride. The date of each major work done (i.e service of the hubs or headset), the date of part replacement and the mileage that part had done (chain, brake pads).

I do the same for my car.

As most of my cycling is commuting, it allows me to plan for expected work and parts replacement. I will then shop around and buy the parts I need in advance.

It also allows me to compare cycling costs vs running a car.

I just change tyres, etc when they need changing.

Not sure why I want to know, perhaps if I was to try different tyres, I have changed to a slightly narrower tyre this time, just because I preferred the looks of the tyre I had on a different bike, but I've no idea if that will affect how long it lasts. Also if you know you have got X thousand miles out of something it starts to look quite cheap.

I'll hunt round in Strava to see where you can log the details, as I record my mileage but nothing else in there.

It would also be interesting to see when I put the studded tyres on the spare bike each year.

MCL to keep track of tyre and chain mileage.

Also record punctures to get an idea of how many miles a tyre has done between visits.
