If I'm going to do a long or difficult ride, I just make sure I talk to everyone who will listen to me, telling them all about it. Can't dip out then without looking a mug. Told everyone last year I was going to climb an Alp in September, despite still weighing over 20 stone. This forced me into putting in all the necessary roadwork in the Cotswolds, Forest of Dean, Wales, and repeated climbs of my local Frocester Hill and Horsepools Hill.
The result?

By the time I got there, I never had a doubt I was going to do it. There was one point where I started to flag, but then I came around a hairpin and saw all the motivational writing from the TDF, still there on the road. "FDJ", "Froome", "Contador", "Team Sky", "Voeckler" etc etc scrawled all over the road. If that doesn't give you a second wind, nothing will. It was like being on the pitch at Wembley of the Centre Court at Wimbledon for me....... and all possible only because I had been talking the talk, and now I had to walk the walk .
This year I'm telling everyone that I'm doing Bealach Na Ba (Britain's longest climb) in September. Guess I'll just have to now.

Well done you must have been on the top of the world.

Have some old friends out that way plus I like the beast lol. Have you got bi polar or something you never seem very happy and always question people believes hobbys. Looking at Old posts its always your name that comes up with negative comments or unhelpful advice. Or you just don't like me someone you have never met.

Certainly was. Think I pretty much proved that anyone can do it, given the right motivation and practice, though. I'm always the first one to roll my eyes when anyone mentions "mission statements" or anything like that at work, but I really think it all starts with saying out loud what you are going to do.

Oh don't get me started on mission statements. That's a good idea to me it's a human factors peer pressure type thing where you tell someone out loud and then feel a positive pressure to carry that out. If it works for you well done. And keep telling everyone. Lol

My mission statement is to factor in cycling into your weekly targets, such that each goal is set, and then acheived with minimal resistance. If a target becomes unacheivable then we will have a break out session with the team to brainstorm some further measures that will reinvigorate your passion, drive and direction so you can acheive the goals set out at the beginning of this paragraph

Just needs a bit of blue sky thinking. Might be a steep learning curve, but failure is not an option. Be an enabler, take ownership of the project, and engage with all your key stakeholders. Aim for small wins, and make it happen guys! (31 years an office drone. Trust me, I've heard it all). Maybe Nike have the best mission statement.... "Just do it".

If you cycle every day to work, I can understand the not being bothered to at weekends... try taking a day or two off cycling during the week and it might give you more motivation to go out on a long weekend ride. Also, I find making up new routes for exploring is good motivation, there's so much of my local countryside I haven't seen properly, roads I've never cycled on etc, it's nice to discover new places and not be in a car.

Not at all, I may not look at things with rose tinted glasses and everyone is not the same, so nor will their comments be. I am not questioning your hobbies, but I do feel we should do the things we enjoy the most the most. You mocked my post about mountain biking in Lincolnshire and then came back with Thetford, just trying to let you know that Lincolnshire has as much to offer as down there, that is not a negative.

I have spent a lot of time answering your posts, giving you idea's of rides etc. You have just picked up on a line or two of maybe the truth that you do not like. Go back to your first time on here and see how many lines I wrote then, none negative and should to most people have been helpful.

Living in London I HATE driving ( sitting in traffic ) sometimes I have to drive as I will need my tools but if I can get away with cycling to a job I will .
Ive never thought about it as hard work or something I need to get motivated about . I just do it .

Solo rides in bad weather are often difficult to stir up any enthusiasm for!

I started organising forum rides so I had other people and interesting routes to gee me up. The forecast here for Saturday isn't great, but I have a group of people joining me for a ride up to Wharfedale and back so I will make the effort to get up early and go out.
This ... or a simpler version is to get some 'ride-buddies' ....
