I’m desperately trying to support the economy by buying things I want. I’m particularly keen on racing bikes and accessories, musical instruments and associated recording equipment etc. Every time I find something I’m interested in, I go to the manufacturers website to find a local dealer, only to find they either don’t carry any stock, or only have about 2 items. I don’t want to order anything, as I want to try it out, or maybe just see it in the flesh. Often, but not always, the problem is that I read silly magazines and online reviews about stuff that won’t be in production for some considerable time. Also, in the last 6 months, I’ve been unable to get a painter and decorator, tree surgeon or builder to actually turn up and tell me how much they want to do a job for me. Meanwhile, organisations such as the NHS waste their time responding to what the customer wants, rather than needs; the equivalent of a car mechanic being required to change the clutch on a car that actually needs new brakes. But the customer must have choice.
It just seems a complete miracle to me that any business I’ve had any dealings with actually survives.

I contacted three builders to quote for our loft conversion. Only one got back to us and he quoted 'Between 10 and 25 thousand pounds'. Not a quote then, more like a very rough estimate. It took him 18 months to respond. I ended up doing the whole thing apart from the stairs and electrics myself.

...........you were lucky! I've been waiting for someone to advise me about a loft conversion ever since we moved here 15 years ago!
...erm......you couldn't pop round and do mine could you? Apart from stairs and electrics of course.

Do it yourself man it's easy! I got some friends to help me lift the 7 RSJs and we paid a mate to help for six months to speed it up but I figured anything a general builder could do I could do.

Probably better. I live next door to a good builder, we were actually friends with them before we moved here, and I just ask him anything I'm not sure about.
