I have heaps of stuff originally ripped to wav format in the 90s. Now all in ITunes. All of it on an iPod. Some synched to iPhone and Pad. Some burnt to DVD as MP3 to play in car.

CDs and LPs in loft. Tapes long gone (I think without a trip to the loft).

New stuff is via Apple but I rarely buy music now. Just listen to radio

I pay 9.99 for Spotify and 25.99 a month for Tidal (my preferred streaming service) as the sound quality is superb. Far better than Spotify and you get videos too. Also, Tidal pay artists more money per stream.

I did try Tidal and could hear the improvement over Spotify, just couldn't stomach over 300 quid a year cost, so stuck with the cheaper one and spent the rest on vinyl. The Tidal Masters on my Naim system sounded fantastic tbh.

My question was how can I play vinyl on my phone. The answer is that I can't. More broadly, sound quality isn't the only consideration to bear in mind when selecting a format. I can't carry my records around with me, I used to do that and they were bloody heavy.

BITD when I was DJing, if I'd have played an MP3 on my mate's rig he'd have turned purple with rage and thrown me off. Used to get a proper bollocking for red lighting the mixer. But to be fair that was the best sounding free party sound system in Sheffield and he had a reputation to uphold.

Yeah I got a bit lost in the back and forth there.

I was being slightly sarky at times so I thought I should clarify or we were going to get completely lost.

I know where you're coming from though. If I had the time and space to set up a proper system I'd want to use the best audio format I could, but it's just not how I listen to music at the moment. This thread is making me wish I could, but the best I can manage right now is probably saving up and getting a really decent set of headphones. That would improve the listening experience at home anyway, even taking into account lousy digital formats.

A large proportion of my listening to music for pleasure is done with headphones nowadays, a mix of vinyl and flacs.

I rarely even turn on my amp when playing at being a dj unless I have company . That's all digital now , no decks only a cheap pc controller .

I might have to give digital mixing a go. I've just bought my daughter a tablet so I can get my iPad back off her, maybe see what I can do with that. The only time I have is the couple of hours after everyone's gone to bed so it's got to be something I can just grab and use, not anything that needs time to set up or what have you.

An ipad would be ideal for that job.

I've tried to use my phone for music but the latency in Android is terrible. I hear iOS is supposed to be much better.

The Ipad runs rings around Android for latency, there is plenty of DJ and other music stuff to play with on the appstore.

Re Spotify payments to Artists - no one is forcing anyone to sign up.

The problem is, once 'bread on the table' and 'rent' is mentioned every teenage 4-piece or baggy-trousered Rapper that knocks up a god-awful track in a garage or bedroom suddenly that thinks they should be paid a fortune by the likes of Spotify.

If they want to make some money stick to the local gig circuits.

Not a great deal of cash in that either unless they're doing an actual ticketed tour. Local gigs may be quite lucrative for a solo artist or two piece, but once there's say five band members to share the £150-200 between, it's just beer money.

I've never been in a band but know several bands and musicians. One of them said the real money is in licencing especially from adverts. Another used to sell 'trinkets' so mugs, posters, stickers, patches etc.

To those with family or friends in bands, give them a shout-out here and the Spotify account holders can stream them so that they earn a bit more than a pittance.

2 bands I know, both metal:

Years ago I bought a pirate cd with all of pink Floyd, was so happy then, circa 1998

Never went for iTunes as it was non transferable upon death, but had a few ipods after generic mp3 players

Funny how things/perception change, did the cd on amazon until realised I was playing the download, still have some in the cellophane

Did amazon music, family, went to Spotify. Paying a somewhat silly monthly subscription but reasoned teenagers would be pestering me for buying music. We listen to more variation now, I would reccomend it, it is better, and have acquired several podcasts along the way. It's a blast at dinner parties getting any request

Everything is cell phone orientated, Spotify via phone to headphones most of the time, the son.os speakers the rest

I'd reccomend streaming to bone conductive headphones in land-rover, probably better than speakers struggling over transmission whine. They work great for office and bike too. I do podcasts or audible when cycling, can still hear surroundings too

Spotify is too expensive, but i use it all the time and travel a lot, so download podcasts, albums for travel

I agree Tidal is expensive but the sound quality is outstanding and they pay way more to artists than Spotify does which is the other reason why I stick with them.
