Hi all,

Been hunting round the internet but can't answer the question above. Is there a website whereI can view a map and trace my route along, so I can keep track of how far I am cycling ?

thanks

Paul

I have an 'acid test' for any software routing programme on the internet.

My test involves a 'recommended cycle route' between Solihull and Knowle. The cycle path uses a footbridge over the M42 avoiding junction 5 and Solihull by-pass.

Toporoute FAILS the test.

Which ones have passed Jim? I'm currently working on a route from here in Wirral to Grasmere, it's probably going to be around 110 miles or so as I want to avoid where possible, the A6. The problem here is that you can accumulate a fair amount of climbing by veering off into the hills near the A6. A perfect route creation site for me would allow me to optimise the route for:

  • Distance - shortest, quickest, most scenic
  • Type of road - A only, B only, unclassified only etc
  • Minimise climbing or maximise climbing

You get the picture, though it's possible to do the above manually, it would be great if such a site existed.

This probably needs a new thread!

If it's a long route I recommend taking one of those wheel things that measure the distance. I think each revolution is a metre. Then just walk the length you cycled with the wheel thing and hey presto, you have your distance. It's good exercise!

Use Mapmyride with the iPhone app. It's quite good except for the fact I have to put my iPhone in my pocket and can't get updates unless I get it back out!

Easy way is to get a cycle computer. You can get a cheap one (like me) for 10pounds, tells you your journey distance, total distance, speed, avg speed, max speed & time. ;)
