Hi and thanks for all the reply's - the pain im getting feels like a direct result of pressure from my small pedals - ive been tweaking the cleats for a few weeks with no noticeable change, it actually feels like the cleats are too far back and the main pressure point is behind the ball of my foot, problem is I cant move them any further forward... I have been looking at shoes and also the pedals mentioned above - im thinking I'll switch to spd-sl if im buying shoes and pedals - do the 3 cleat spd-sl shoes provide more support than the spd pedals already mentioned?

Thanks again

Try M530s which are M520s with a platform for more support. Double sided convenience, and available in black or white

I now have those and they did help reduce any hot spots for me, worth considering if do not want to change your whole shoe system.

I would stay with SPD shoes tbh. I went with spd-sl as it was recommended by the lbs when I bought my road bike. As my distances have grown, I have wanted to wander around off the bike, but spd-sl ain't for walking.
Slowly turning all 3 of my bikes to SPD pedals. One has M324 dual platforms which allow me to go clipless or use normal trainers.
Spd-sl should be used if you race or do TT in my opinion.

If you can feel the size of your pedals through your shoes, your shoes simply aren't doing the job: if the soles are properly stiff, it doesn't make any real difference if the pedal is 1sq cm or 6 sq inches, as long as it's firmly attached. Personally I'd start by investing in better shoes, before going the whole hog with changing your pedal system too.

I have the M530 pedals on my MTB and I still get hot spots. The poster above me is right, in my (albeit short experience) the shoes are the key. I play with my cleat all day long and it never gets that much better. However, I tried a friends Spech' BG shoes and they made a world of difference.

Another free fix is checking your shoes are still tight when u are about 30 miles in, as may be the movement of your foot in the shoe giving you ache later on
