Hi - I have a pair of the little m520 spd pedals and think i have a 'hot spot', just behind the ball of my foot. Ive been putting a few miles in recently and have done one very long ride and its been getting worse every time I ride.

Anyway I'm looking at spd pedals that support the foot, will these do the job of supporting your feet around the pedal? or should I just switch to spd?

Thanks

Not sure I understand this question. M520s are SPD pedals not shoes, aren't they?

While I'm being confused, when you say ''behind the ball of my foot'' do you mean closer to the instep?

Any hotspot problem I've had has been down to narrow shoes - Shimanos, for example, tend to be narrow - or the wrong socks.

sorry if I was unclear - im looking for pedals with more support. My shoes are a good fit. the the pain is toward the instep, in the middle of my foot. Im hoping I can get some pedals that will solve the problem, if not I'll switch to spd-sl

oh and yes they are pedals, my bad, ive changed the op

cheers

Ah, gotcha! I must say any hot spot I've suffered is less on my tourer with 530s but I've never suffered from discomfort there. So they do give me better support but they're not racing pedals - they're nice, solid, but not light. Besides, my hot spot has always been at the very outside of the foot, outboard from the ball of the foot.

maybe try some of these - they give more support with the same cleats

My feet get equally sore on the M520s on one bike as the rather costly A600s on the other. That said I think it's my shoes or cleat positioning that's the issue

Or try Shimano M324 dual SPD's. Flat on one side for commuting/pop down the pub. SPD the other for long distance rides. No issues with hotspots.

I changed to these pedals and found them fantastic for support.
Good at this price too

Get a better pair of shoes with a more rigid soles.
Agree with someone who mentioned Shimano shoes. I get a bit of a hot spot now and again with the ones I have. Don't get the same problem with a pair of (wider) Specialized.

Stiff soles and plenty of room in the toe box! I bet your hotspots are worse when its hot...? This is because your feet swell up in the heat and squash against the sides of the shoe. Nice wide shoes and fairly loose straps at the front will help.

This is why I asked the OP where the hotspot was. Mine in Shimano shoes has been on the very widest part of the foot so it would be right for me but his are behind the ball of the foot, i.e. closer to the arch. I've never had that one.

Squashing the feet still causes pain by the ball. Its what I had and wider shoes helped a lot. Its something to do with pressure on the metatarsal, apparently...
