Not sure why I'm posting, think I need to get it off my mind with a natter and wondered how people in similar situations get on.

I am fortunate enough to travel all around Europe (and sometimes further) with work probably about 40% of my working time. It has really got me down recently when I was feeling the fittest I ever have done on the bike, putting in loads of miles and feeling great on club runs putting some good time in on the front.

Three weeks ago however I caught food poisoning and was out for the count for about 5 days. Once recovered I was away in Amsterdam and then Istanbul for two weeks. Now coming back I have very little motivation to get out on my own or club rides and when I have ridden to work it's been great to be back on two wheels but it's hard work!

Guess I just need to maybe take some kit and hit the gym a couple of times while away or go for a run. And not overindulge just because I can.

The gym? Running?
Thought you wanted to rediscover your fitness, achieved by putting in loads of bike miles?
It's not rocket salad; just start riding more regularly thereby increasing your miles and fitness.

When I become prime minister I'll force drivers to pay an extra tax..Cyclist support tax, which will be levied at 25% of total income for each vehicle owned. So Two car homes pay 50%. This cash will be paid into a fund and bona fide cyclists will be able to apply for a salary subsidy paid from the fund to allow them to give up or partially give up work to keep riding and stay fit.

Vote for BOAB you know it makes sense.
 
Go running - or if you are desperate, hit the gym bikes...
I was going to say the same.

When I used to travel for work, I shifted the emphasis from worrying too much about the work and onto the time off inbetween. Jogging to sight see, picking accommodation to offer gym and pools etc, even simply choosing locations best suited to just get out and walk. Best result was several months in the lodge style accommodation of a sports and leisure club set on a golf course in Bournemouth. If anything it was a healthier option than staying at home. Staff were pleasant and I became a regular week day visitor, once in a routine it's sorted. It's so easy to excuse yourself from doing anything when away, that it needs planning in as the backbone and positive side of the journey. A good company should also support this, or if not, then change jobs :biggrin:.

Guess I was focused on your lack of motivation you alluded to when you were home.

Anyway, good luck. It can be hard to get back in the swing of things but gets harder the longer you leave it.

You don't need to do a whole lot of cycling to stay reasonably cycling fit. Use the gym bikes and do some High Intensity Intervals 3 times a week. Google HIT training for more info. Your endurance might take a dive but that's relatively easy to get back when you can fit in some longer time on the bike.

I would say you have hit the low after the endorphines of regular exercise have worn off because of the enforced lay off. As you say, when you have ridden you feel great. So exercise when you can but make it small to start with and grow it just like before.

Plus the crap weather is hitting us too making us not want to go out too. I do admire anyone who has the discipline to go on a turbo.
