I will be staying in Nottingham for week in October so I can ride a couple of Sportives on two consecutive weekends. And was wondering if anyone has any local knowledge of some medium hills in the area that I can ride on a loop just to help keep my legs fresh before the second sportive. I am going to be staying in the Netherfield area so any south of Nottingham would help.

Cheers

South of you is the vale of Belvoir which is flat but there are climbs out of it you could visit Belvoir castle ( nice cafe) that sits on top of the ridge .Then ride back down into the Vale which is good fun . Nice cycling friendly cafe between Harby and Stathern called Dove Cottage then you could go up the hill out of Stathern and back via Long Clawson Hope that gives you some ideas

Any ride from Netherfield through Carlton or Gedling up to Plains Road in Mapperley will give you a good work out.

More generally, head out north-west towards the peak district and you'll find plenty of hills. Cloves Hill outside Brackley Gate (included in route above), Morley Lane out of Little Eaton (again, included in route above), Hindersitch Lane in Critch Carr / close to the tramway museum and of course the gruelling Riber Road in Starkholmes.

More south, Bradmore road between Bradmore/Bunny and Wysall and also Thurlby Lane leading towards Stanton-on-the-Wolds are good 'fun'. Further south, Beacon Hill is good.

I cycle around the Vale of Belvoir although just the relatively flat stuff at the moment but the hills look quite good. West Bridgeford cycling club seem to be there every Sunday, would it be worth getting in touch with them?

If heading this way then I find that going down Smalley Mill Road and then up Sandy Hill (a very nice uphill) makes a nice loop.

I know a few people are happy to do a lot of training on it because it's flat and then a solid hill and easy to make a circuit from it.

I like that route though.
