Hi, I ride in each day on the A164 from Beverley to Hessle. So that's up to Skidby Mill and then down and up to Castle Hill before slipping off behind the Ramada Jarvis through Willerby.

BTW I don't use the cycle path they have along that stretch as it swaps from one side of the road to the other and it's a PITA trying to cross the road when it's busy.

So is that hilly 'cos it sure feels like it sometimes! Mind you I'm on a twelve year old MTB with some Nokia road tyres, and panniers carrying a change of clothes for work, spare tubes (2 visits from the p*nct*r* fairy in last 3 weeks so far this year!), and loads of other stuff I probably don't need, so it's not very "lightweight".

When the weather improves I'll be back on the full route which is Bridlington to Hessle along the A165 - A1035 - A164; the A165 is rather more undulating than hilly, but after a day at work and a couple of hours of cycling the last bit seems like hard work.

More East Riding than a commute in the city then. But a Brid to Hessle commute? I'm seriously impressed - beyond my capabilities. Definitely more hilly to the west, but then as most of my cycling is to the east of the city it usually doesn't effect me too much.

Just thought of another Hull 'hill' - Noddle Hill Way

Brid to Hessle . Bev to Hessle would be enough for me. And, yes, that's definitely not a flat route.

I used that cycle route south of Beverley just the once. Never again! It's safer just to stay on the road.

Saltshouse road is where the 'hills' are. I did say they would only be classed as slopes by the rest of the nation.

Well impressed by the Bev to Hessle commute, and completely overawed by the Brid to Hessle, way beyond my capabilities. I've cycled Beverley to Bilton when I used to work in Beverley, it was quicker than waiting for a train to Hull then cycling home.

At this rate I'm gonna have to buy a new Ipod with more capacity to fit all these suggestions on, then increase my route to have time to listen to them.
Maybe I'll have to transfer back to the Beverley office. That would be a challenging lunch break to get home & back.

Going back to the original post, I'd say that 15mins for 4 miles is pretty good. I often find I loose quite a bit of time when riding on busy roads around town. Throw in a couple of sets of traffic lights and you'll be surprised at how much longer the journey takes when compared to a quiet day and having everything sync right to give a clear run.

In the rush hour I can ride from Beverley Station to Skidby Mill almost as quickly as cars around me drive it. On a good day the 9 mile ride can take as little as 35 minutes; on the reverse ride quite often I'll see a car at the traffic lights at Hessle Square, and then pass again going up to Skidby as traffic queues for the roundabout. Maybe they've stopped for fuel but when I was driving this route I always reckoned to allow about 30 mins from Beverley to Hessle. The next day it will take 45 mins and I can't see where I've lost the 10 minutes.

Not tried an IPod (or some other device). I read somewhere if you pick the right music it helps with the pedaling cadence.
