More gears? I don't know: you said you didn't use the gears you used to have, but if you want to ride up Ben Nevis then crack on.

What I'm trying to say is that if it works for you, then it is the right decision. There is no "right" answer to your question, beyond what makes you happy: this isn't an ordeal by fire.

As for resale values, forget it. Have a look on Ebay, it is awash with budget bikes (which both of your choices are). Far more likely, is that this bike will become your "second choice" bike (Winter hack/pop to the shops etc).

PS Get a shave.

Thanks for your input Martin. Much obliged. Gotta make my mind up soon as the sales end this weekend. Its very difficult choosing a bike from a laptop. Idealy I would buy one form my local bike shop but they only stock Merida.

Merida are a good quality, but lesser known brand...

No Jimmy you misunderstood. I'm not undecided on the disc brakes. You answered my question. They are not worth the extra £50!
I was saying I am undecided on which bike to go for but the general concensus seems to be RCR and as that was my first choice that is what I am leaning towards. I hear what your saying there is no definitive answer! Whatever suits me best. The problem is I dont know. In ideal world I would like to try both bikes for a week or so and see which one worked for me. As that is not possible. Just have to take an educated guess. Whatever one I go. I'm sure I will have that niggling feeling what would the other bike been like and have I made the right decision. Like I said I am hopeless.

Retailers and manufacturers spend a considerable amount of time and money to try and convince us that our lives will be a barren wasteland unless we buy their product. Equally, my opinion is only that: my opinion, which is subjective and based on my own prejudices and experiences.

I rang the Co-op and you can take the bike for a spin around the carpark provided it's not raining and you take some ID and a credit card.

I also contacted Wiggle: because the bike is discounted it is not covered by their usual trial period conditions, so you could only return it, if it was unridden.

Not much help I'm afraid.

You'll be the one riding the bike, so you'll have to decide: good luck and be sure to let us know what you went for!

Cheers Jimmy that was above and beyond the call of duty. I contacted EBC myself to check stock. They have plenty but at a holding warehouse and not in Edinburgh. The quickest they can get one to the shop would be Monday which is a blow as I was hoping to pick it up on the Weekend. They have one in store I can have a look at. So I may take a trip up on Sat and see it in the flesh. But either way its going to be the following weekend before I can get my hands on one if I plump for the RCR.

Well, decision has been made. Went to EBC yesterday morning. Staff very friendy and helpful. I have bought a courier race and pimped it up with ergo grips, spd pedals, mudguards, lights, pump, water bottle and smart phone holder!
Its getting built from scratch so can't collect until Sunday 22nd. Can't wait. Thanks for all your advice. Mac.

just a thought, ive just got a specialised tricross. would something like that be an option? though you would have to up your budget a little.

Gary, I just found you in this thread by accident.
I'm contemplating getting a seconhand Tricross for commuting - do you have one for sale?
Any chance of some details if you do? Size, age condition etc...
