At the risk of thread derail, joking aside, I bought such a big bike to get proper panniers rather than speed per se and to be honest it's easier to pootle about on than my old, not very sporty 600. Nice to be able to buy British on merit rather than mere sentiment too.
Yep...I bought a 1050 Triumph Sprint, full luggage, ABS the lot.

found it totally pointless, especially at 38MPG (my wifes car does better than that), huge tax and servicing costs that could buy me a new pushbike

Got shot and have been riding a 125cc scooter ever since. Nothing is easier or in my opinion (and experience) better at getting about a busy town, where a max speed is 40mpg
yes you can, they can be better trained, they can have less pressurised working conditions, combine this with better enforcement and penalties that hit hard, penalties that not only hit the driver but also the operator - £90 fine for speeding, lets increase that to £500 for the driver and £5000 for the operator, the operators will soon be very careful who the let loose on the roads.

I know you and other have your heart set on what a redesigned cab may bring, and I hope you're right because that is what we are going to get. Personally I think it will make next to no difference - the problem is the person driving not the lorry. In the vid in this thread the driver has adequate view of the road he is turning into.
I'm all for better training, less time pressure etc, but you can't stop people farking up. So, when they do screw-up, you need to try and make the consequences of such behaviour less serious for others. If a driver was in a position to see another road user more easily, he would have a better chance of avoiding them, like in the OP. That said, no amount of training or cab re-design is going to stop gross negligence.

What a twonk. No observation, no attempting take the dodgy corner in the inappropriate vehicle at a cautious speed. This wasn't just bad luck a driver looking but failing to see, but a combination of a deliberate attitude and deliberate actions coming into play. An utter dilbert.

Devils advocate:

Was the driver being totally inattentive in not seeing the motorcycle? Or was he spending too much time checking his mirror, to make sure he doesn't wipe out the lady with a pram, with the rear of the vehicle?

It's not an either/or thing. He needs not to kill people at either end.

He can't watch both at the same time, as soon as the rear of the HGV clears the curb, it's too late for the motorcyclist.

HGV driver was turning into too quick, didn't appear to slow much. And should have been able to see the motorcyclist approaching down the road, before the turn, as you can see straight into his side window.

Fixed wheel fanatic.
I'm failing to see anything here other than "Lorry driver runs over stationary motorcyclist". I can't see how anyone can think about defending such poor driving.
Ask a question, if he did this during his driving test, would he pass? I think you may all know the answer to that.

The Dilbert (good description @Drago) should be thrown in a deep pit and buried for a long time.^_^

that's quite poor - reckon minr (1050 sprint gt) does 55mpg or more. Doubtless much worse round town, but I don't do many miles round town.
I did similar. 650 Versys to a 300 Forza scooter. 80mpg, cruises easily at motorway speeds and very, very easy to throw around.
I considered a larger engine, like a 300 but after being given the vespa (grand tourer, so a big shape) I was happy. I cant do motorways...not really... but then I have never needed to so far.

I also cant tour (although myself and two pals are considering a vespa trip to Bruges later in the summer) but can rent a big bike with a fraction of the cash I have saved.

I am spending a bit of time in Iceland at the moment and want to take a weekend (around work trips) to rent a bmw from Viking tours and really explore....then, its back to the vespa and the real world.

I was commuting, so all around town unfortunately.

Also as a faired bike it was hot...bloody hot, like the hottest bike I have ever owned.

Ps, mine was an 08 sprint GT in gun metal...lovely bike with a devilish noise at high revs.
