The fuel economy thing and small engines working harder is only a generalisation and in some circumstances. There will be tiddlers that are very good and considerably more of them then huge monsters that are very economic.
My 1.9TDi returns in excess of 60mpg (76mpg best) on a run and better then 48mpg in town
Diesels can be very clean but there isn't the legislation for it. Trucks are cleaner then cars especially the Euro iv and Euro v specification.
Have you considered the Cadillac Sixteen? It is supposed to be economical as its V16 engine will only use 8 or 4 cylinders to run about until you really need all that 1000 bhp of the V16.
