Also available in bzp mild steel & stanless steel, might be worth seeing if you can get the half hex version,it may afford more grip, not sure on the last bit,as I have never tried them.
Forgot a bit, they come in countersunk & non countersunk version, best establish which you have before buying.
Thanks, I have ordered the round ones and will give them a go in a piece of scrap. I did have the same thought about the hex type that it may bite a bit better. At least it's a plan B.

Just checked the ones I have which are the thinner steel ones. 7.05mm. i think the alloy ones are generally a bit thicker. Don't think araldite will work satisfactorily, but you could go up to 6mm thread insert at worst case which is a 9.2mm hole IIRC

Rivnut tool ordered from ebay arrived today. Unfortunately the 5mm mandrel with it has a dodgy thread ! It would not go into a 5mm rivnut or a 5mm nut. Out of frustration I threaded a 5mm nut onto a 50mm long bolt and put a washer on and then a rivnut on the end of it, dropped it into the frame hole and by holding the head of the bolt and turning the nut it compressed the rivnut and hey presto I now have my bottle cage back on ! I can send the Rivnut tool back and the whole job has cost me £1.89 for a bag of 10 rivnuts. I feel pretty chuffed with myself. I am off back into the garage to make a "flux capacitor" for my mountain bike !
Thanks to all those who offered help and advice.

I wouldn't put steel rivnuts in an Alu frame.
