You could get another heater if you can afford it, Arch! I am going to get XmrsIS a 3kW one as an early Christmas present because her flat is like an ice-box!

I do recall my childhood home having no central heating - there was ice on the inside of the bedroom window in the morning in the winter! And because I'd be brought up without central heating, I didn't know any different and didn't miss it. My friends' houses with their central heating seemed luxurious though!

Me too. On really cold mornings, the ice made lovely filigree patterns on the windows. Always took a hot water bottle to bed in winter. Never seemed to notice the cold that much though because we always kept a real fire going (had to if you wanted hot water!). I didn't really envy central heating in friends houses as I can't remember noticing it, though I'm sure a lot of them must have had it.

Our first house when we got married didn't have central heating either - just one gas fire to heat the whole place! We did invest in an oil-filled radiator for the bedroom and a fan heater too.

Know the feeling.. For 4 years our heating on the barn conversion was a fan heater in a 13 foot caravan. At 420m altitude (a lot higher than England's highest m/way) it can get very cold, even in Spring and early Autumn - I started wearing cycle gear under work clothes, till I got the proper work stuff. Have now enclosed a bit of the barn and we bought a state-of-the-art paraffin heater this year.. Luxury!, they're brilliant with good quality fuel, odourless and vapour-free. And they have a thermostat and timer.

When I first moved into my current house the winows didn't shut, there was no ceilings and the wind, rain and snow came through the roof slates and there were no carpets so really drafty floors too.
Inside the house was a solid 5degC colder then outside due to the thermal mass of the house and it having no south facing side.
We also had ice on the inside of the window glass and cooking a hot meal was a pain, had to eat it from the pan to save it going cold too quickly.

I lived by sealing up a room, 5'x6' and leaving an oil radiator running in it. That was the only room I could spend my days and evenings in before sleeping fully clothed with all my wardrobe of clothes over the bed to keep warm.

After five years of that, during building works, I decided it was time to get central heating so I got two of the biggest boilers I could afford to heat the house with.
I think they are economical as they just tick over rather then running all the time. Bags of loft insulation helps too as well as internal wall insulation.

You were lucky.

The pump on our central heating failed on Sunday. I've had a text from the plumber to say that as soon as he can get a replacement, he'll be round to install it. In the meantime, it's a tad chilly inside, but not as cold as outside, where it was -14 in my greenhouse on Sunday night.
