ASDA £5. Get in.

I bought one of those, and wore it for all of 10 minutes before shoving it straight in the bin. Damn thing nearly choked me to death. But then, that's what happens when a clueless beginner like me buys a cheap helmet from a supermarket.

I now understand that a helmet should fit snugly enough that it does not wobble from side-to-side. And that tightening the chin-strap until you are blue in the face is not a solution if it does ;)

I highly recommend the type of helmet that has a rachet-type mechanism at the back. This tightens the helmet itself to fit your noggin perfectly. Then, the chin strap can be worn comfortably.

I wear one that has a disk tightener on the back. If you can't get to any bike shops to try them on then looking at places like Evans and Wiggle online and finding an adjustable one may be the best option

(Well, someone has to do it...)...There is - you seem unaware - a significant weight of opinion that holds helmets to be ineffective or even positively injurious. Baffled? Understandable.

As a non-wearer who is vehemently anti-compulsion (tho' equally enthusiastic for the individual's right to choose to wear, if they prefer), I'd suggest a visit to http://www.cyclehelmets.org/ before you leap to any conclusions.

Just 'cos it's 'obvious' don't necessarily make it true. Read, then make your own mind up.

£8 Argos value range. Well vented, ratchet adjuster at back, plenty of adjustment on chin straps. Not as fancy looking as more expensive ones, but would do it's job at absorbing a bit of gravel rash in that type of off. Although I always wear a helmet (except on my BSO!!) I do not think they would be much use in a serious accident and I am against compuslion.

<blah blah>[/QUOTE]

cyclehelmets.org was brought up in post #4, and the OP told us in #3 exactly why he/she needs to wear a helmet.

Pay attention at the back. Or did you hit your head when you last fell off your bike?

I have a MET helmet which I never wear, it is the right size (55cm with adjustable fit) but it's just the wrong shape. I have a narrow head and I just cannot find a helmet that costs less than my bike which will fit securely. I hate the feeling of wearing a helmet but would wear one if I felt it was doing it blooming job rather than balancing on my head and making me uncomfortable.

Be still my aching sides...

It was, but only briefly, and I thought it bore flagging up. And he did, but are helmets mandatory in China? I rather doubt it.

In other words you couldn't understand why this hadn't degenerated into a flame war over helmets and decided to stir it up a bit!!??:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:
