Heated seats were (I understand) first use by Volvo and they were a safety feature. Rather than drive the first few miles with the cold affecting your body the heated seat helps you relax.
They are not mandatory so don't worry that you have to go out and buy one. Personally I like them.
My wife's car.......a year newer than mine has a heated steering wheel which is really useful in cold weather.
