Having my bike services - worth it?

Guys,

One thing the bike man said is that A) i need a new chain because it is streched, and becasue I need a new chain I also need a new cassete, and that if i used my current cassete with a new chain the gear changing problem would be even worse than it is now. Does this make sense to any of yuo, or do you think he is just trying to bump up the cost of repair!

The scenario he is presenting is most likely and is not just a reason to bump up costs. The old chain will have worn, subsequently the old cassette will have worn to match it. Putting a new unworn chain on a worn cassette will result in a non perfect match which will cause the chain to jump down the gear sprockets. Occasionally if the chain wasn't too worn you may get away with just changing that but not always.

Ok thanks for the info. I will go out and buy a new chain and cassette - how hard can it be to fix
