I normally go for the most US sounding one (or US spelling), ignoring any obscure ones e.g. STO_E = STOVE rather than STOKE, STOLE, STONE, STOPE, STORE, STOTE or STOWE, usually works

I do the same sort of thing - I'm sure it was easier to get in to the setter's mind when it was the original Sam Wardle, slightly nerdy word list, but in your example I'd go STORE first, as I'd think it more common in US usage.

I generally avoid plurals and past participles, other than when they're also a common adjective - dunno if that's actually a 'rule' of the word list or just something I've made up. For example, faced with _ate_ I'd try 'gated' but would think twice about 'eaten'.
